Life in the Scottish Hebrides can be harsh – the edge of the world some call it. For the beautiful Kirsty Macleod, the love of Murdo and their dreams of America promise an escape from the scrape of the land, the repression of the Church and the inevitability of the path their lives would take.

But as the Great War looms Murdo is conscripted. The villagers hold a grand Road Dance to send their young men off to battle. As the dancers swirl and sup, the wheels of tragedy are set in motion.

I went to a screening of the film
Road Dance and the author and one of the actors hosted a q and a session. The book is based on a true story. It’s shocking and sad at the same time. The film is great if you get a chance to see it.

I had watched the film on television recently and was gripped by the story. Set on a remote Hebridean island at the time of the first World War, the plot centres around the main character being raped at The Road Dance marking the young men going off to war. The plot unfolds with a brilliant twist at the end which no-one could have foreseen. Very well written with a concise, clear style of writing. I could not put the book down, even having watched the Film beforehand. Highly recommended, one of my best reads for a very long time.

This is a super novel set in the First World War and how it affected the good people of the Outer Hebrides. It is a gripping fictional story set in an historical context in a place Mackay describes so beautifully. The reader gets a real sense of place and the characters feel like people we care about. A great whodunnit in a beautiful but hard setting. I loved this novel and am looking forward to it being released soon on the big screen.

I bought this book because it was set in the Hebrides. But in reality it could have been set anywhere with a sea cliff. I only spotted a couple of small proofreading/editing errors which can be a real problem with some kindle downloads.

My main beef with this book is the blurb on amazon which is a precis of the complete book apart from the epilogue. It should have ‘Spoiler Alert’ above it. But the book is well written, a sad and often heart wrenching story and one I am pleased to have read. I shall read more by John MacKay.

Absolutely brilliant book, well written. Couldn’t put it down.. In fact it’s 4am and I’ve read the full novel in an evening. The torment and shame of babies born out of wedlock is thankfully confined to the past..evil.tongues of.others bringing desperation and hopelessness in other’s. The twist at the end I didn’t see coming believing the guilty party to.be.the spurned love.

I enjoyed reading this book but found that it felt as if there should have been so much more to the story. A very unsatisfactory conclusion!
