£4.70

From the number one bestselling author, Peter James, comes The Secret of Cold Hill. The spine-chilling follow-up to The House on Cold Hill. Now a smash-hit stage play.

Cold Hill House has been razed to the ground by fire, replaced with a development of ultra-modern homes. Gone with the flames are the violent memories of the house’s history, and a new era has begun.

Although much of Cold Hill Park is still a construction site, the first two families move into their new houses. For Jason and Emily Danes, this is their forever home, and for Maurice and Claudette Penze-Weedell, it’s the perfect place to live out retirement. Despite the ever present rumble of cement mixers and diggers, Cold Hill Park appears to be the ideal place to live. But looks are deceptive and it’s only a matter of days before both couples start to feel they are not alone in their new homes.

There is one thing that never appears in the estate agent brochures: nobody has ever survived beyond forty in Cold Hill House and no one has ever truly left . . .

Firstly I believe in ghosts. The characters of Jason and Emily move into a fabulous house on the site of an old building. The house from the previous novel. So ghosts expected. Jason and Emily are not particularly nice people, he is an obnoxious self opinionated cynic who thinks he and “darling” Emily are the the standard by which every one else should live. As for the story , although well written it is is just irritating, because something happens then it didn’t . Without giving any spoilers it reminded me of an English teacher many years ago asking the class to write a story about something unusual that happens. Write whatever you like but don’t at the end say it was all a dream. I rest my case.

Enjoyed reading it but not what I was expecting. I liked the very many characters that were involved. Too many to discuss.

Ooh, I loved this spooky book! It’s totally eerie and will have the hairs on the back of your neck prickling as you read it.

I really enjoyed how well developed the characters were. Jason and Emily were the perfect newbies to the estate, bringing with them art and excitement. Maurice and Claudette had been living there a while longer and were such apt secondary characters. Although I was mostly creeped out while reading this book, Maurice and Claudette provided a bit of light humour. I actually found my self tittering on a few occasions at their antics and conversations. I’m just going to say donkey clocks and Quality Street, and I’ll leave it there. They were a genius stroke.

As for the haunting, I’d recommend not doing what I did which was reading my Kindle in the dark. Although, if you like the full works when it comes to atmosphere, then maybe I would recommend it. Actually, read it in the dark, enjoy all it has to offer. This is something I do a lot when I read supernatural books.

The mystery and history elements to the story had depth and were filled with intrigue. As for the village of Cold Hill, I think I’d give it a miss if it was a real place. Too scary – hehe.

To sum up, if you want a supernatural read full of ghostly goings on that will have you checking over your shoulder and flinching at bumps in the night, then ‘The Secret of Cold Hill’ is your book. Frightening, fun and fabulous!

I genuinely don’t like leaving negative reviews, and only do so when something is so bad that I feel worse for the people parting with their hard-earned cash than for the person that created the work. That said, this is just my opinion, and others may really enjoy this book. MINOR SPOILER ALERT…So. The Secret of Cold Hill. What secret? I read the first one, and most of what you know about Cold Hill is in there. I don’t think any big secret was revealed here. I’ve read more horror than I care to think, and sometimes it’s cliched and sometimes it’s original. And sometimes it’s just dull and non-sensical, as is the case here. The protagonists constantly experience supernatural events, but then when the lights go out for the hundredth time, they muse that it’s a power cut or a problem with the wiring…again. Or the banging on the floor is the new wood settling in…again. When they hear voices threatening them in sinister ways, that follow on directly from the conversation they were having, it turns out it was dialogue from the TV which mysteriously turned itself on. Really? A conversation that fits perfectly into the one being had by the characters that’s on the TV at the right time? Not just once, but many times. This is most of the book, by the way. It goes on and on, and the behaviour of the characters continues to be completely illogical. There are no twists, no character development, no intriguing arcs. It’s such lazy writing, I’m amazed at the positive reviews, but dumfounded that such a renowned author can churn this out.

Good old fashioned ghost story bought up to date. Will there be any more cold hill books? I hope there is.
