This is a great book, diagrams very good, simple to follow. The only downside for me was the weight of it. Would definitely recommend.

I wanted a ‘how to…’ book to learn basic sewing techniques and this is perfect. Covering a huge array of topics there’s everything you need to sew. It’s really well laid out and describes everything in clear plain English. There are helpful pictures that show you what is being described which is really useful when you’re trying something new. This book is really good value for money and would make a great gift for someone starting sewing.

I’ve been a huge fan of DK books for many years and my sons who are now in their late 20’s were brought up on DK books and in fact 90% of their book collection was DK. This sewing book didn’t disappoint, in good old DK style you get the larger than life colourful pictures with everything labelled and step by step explanations & instructions even a complete beginner would be able to get started straight away. I have been sewing for as long as I can remember but usually only made cushion covers, table cloths, curtains, duvet covers and clothes etc however last year I’d taken quite an interest in quilting and as I’ve got a serger & also updated my old sewing machine for a much more modern one I thought I’d treat myself to a new sewing book too. This DK book replaces several other sewing books I have and yet covers far more than what all of them put together covered, it covers the basics for everything you need to know to get started and more or if like me you simply want to be updated or freshen your memory this is the book to do it. It’s by far one of my favourite sewing books and is the type of book you would go back to over and over again just for reference especially if you need to source a stitch type or embroidery pattern or foot etc that you haven’t used for some time this is a great book to have. Very pleased with my book.

This is a great reference book and just what I was looking for. As a beginner I find instructions in dressmaking patterns can be confusing, so I bought this to support that and it is just right for my needs. Has a good section on tools and fabric types (fabric can be confusing). A good section on basic functional stitches, seams and hems. Large section on altering patterns and then the techniques on garment construction. Mostly aimed at dressmaking. Lots of step by step pics making it easy to see what to do. This is definitely a reference book, not a project book, but does have some projects you can do if you wish. If you are looking for a project book this might not be for you. If you are looking for a craft book, this may not be for you. If you want to know techniques to construct garments and alter them for a better fit, this is definitely a must buy.

I am a beginner hobby sewist and got this book as a reference. The overall layout of the book is wonderful, not intimidating nor too boring for someone who’s still learning about sewing. This book covers almost all of the basics with difficulty levels identified for each techique. I do wish this has a section for stitch issues and how to resolve them because i believe it’s one of the basics one should learn.

I used to make clothes, & soft furnishings but have got out of practice and bought this book in hopes of some inspiration. I was really impressed by how clear and thorough it is and by the range of topics it covers – so much so that I bought another copy for my daughter who is a sewing newbie and absolutely loves this book.
