The Snow Angel (Detectives von Klint and Berg Book 1)
£2.80
A teenage suicide. A murdered pharmacist. A missing girl. Is the obvious connection the right one?
When a boy leaps to his death from a bridge in the northern town of Umeå, Sweden, police discover drugs scattered in the snow near his body. The town has seen a dramatic increase in narcotic use among its youth, but nobody knows where the pills are coming from.
Relocating from Stockholm with her teenage daughter, Detective Charlotte von Klint expected Umeå to be a quiet backwater, a snow-covered change of pace from fighting the criminal underworld of the capital. But when a pharmacist is found brutally murdered in her apartment, and a young girl and her dealer boyfriend vanish without a trace after a party, suddenly Umeå doesn’t seem so benign. And the boy on the bridge doesn’t feel like an isolated incident.
Is the dealer the perpetrator? Or just another victim? And can it be a coincidence that a shadow from Charlotte’s past, Syndicates boss Tony Israelsson, has recently been released from prison and is reportedly headed for Umeå?
As the snow deepens and the body count rises, Charlotte and her boss, local cop Per Berg, find themselves in a deadly pursuit, with time rapidly running out.

A suicide, a murdered pharmacists and a missing girl. The Snow Angel hits the ground running and has you hooked form the first few chapters. It has all the hallmarks of fast paced thriller – a page turner.
For the most part it lives up to its early promise. However, it does have its flaws. The style it is written in is sparse at times, to the point. On the plus side this helps maintain its speed and urgency. But what you get in speed you lose in detail. This is apparent no more so than with the two detectives, Charlotte von Klint and Per Berg. I never felt they gelled and I didn’t find them totally engaging, especially Berg. This is true of most of the characters in the story. I feel that although you can get away with it with the supporting characters the protagonists need to be more rounded, more fleshed out, more believable. The story itself however is a good one touching on teenage angst, annorexia, bulimia and substance abuse. It also has a good plot and although the conclusion is a little convoluted and rushed (I felt the tying up of the loose ends was a little forced) it is to a certain degree a satisfying one. It also leaves enough for a follow up book. It is at times dark and brutal, although it isn’t Jo Nesbo’s standard of dark and brutal, it isn’t quite as gritty as those books, it doesn’t have the same depth either.
In the end despite my criticisms it is worth a read, it is a good story, and it is a page turner.

Couldn’t get into in. Thought it very flat. Didn’t finish.

It was really refreshing to read a story about police officers who don’t have some sort of gimmick in an effort to make them appear more interesting.
The storyline was very good, believable and suspenseful with the identity of the killer coming very near the end.

Really enjoyed following the twists and turns in this Swedish police procedure and fully expect it to be turned into one of those wonderful, atmospheric Scandi-noir thrillers.

Thoroughly enjoyable read, very captivating. Yes, some slight plot errors, but this doesnt detract from the story as a whole. Oozing forward to the release of ‘The Mermaid’ next year.

Really enjoyed this book. A lot of twists which took me a time to sort out, but once into the story it was very gripping and I couldn’t out the book down

Carefully crafted story that draws you in and keeps you gripped. Well translated to English with only slight misconceptions that are really easy to overlook because the story is so good. The start, with its short, staccato sentences made me think I wouldn’t be able to read it but this stops after that first scene so don’t let that put you off. I really enjoyed this book.
