Review:
Thank you to Zoe at Zooloos Book Tours for my spot on the tour!
It’s safe to say the striking front cover and the intriguing description definitely had my attention caught and made this a must read for me. I was excited to see what I would uncover.
After finishing the book, I must admit I admit I had a few up and down moments with the read. The concept of a daughter marrying their mum’s ex felt a little unbelievable but at the same time, I was so interested to see how this would play out and liked that it was a unique ideas.
As for the characters, I had to keep them at arms length because they all made me feel a little uneasy. I didn’t know who to trust and all of them felt as if they were quite hard to emotionally connect with. But then, after reading this book, I can understand why and think it was a very smart move from the author. It is also safe to say the author is brilliant at creating characters that really do get under your skin.
It took me a short time to get into the read but then once I did, I would often say to myself just one more chapter. The was a big build up with so much happening and I was looking forward to the climax, but when I got to what I thought the climax was… there was something else! Literally, action after action, plot twist after plot twist, right up until the very end.
I needed a moment after reading to try digest everything, and to be honest as I write this review, I’m still digesting it now. This book is what I would describe as a whirlwind of a read, I’d say some may find it a marmite read, but what I can say, is this is a unique story and a book you won’t forget in a hurry.

I really wondered how on earth this situation could possibly arise! I too would do anything to support my daughter – but have her to live in my house as the wife of my ex-husband? The setting was good for me as I have a friend who works a 30 acre farm on a Welsh mountain so I could easily relate. At first I found the story a little slow moving but then came several really unexpected twists which put quite a different slant on it. Very interesting.

4* ADVANCED KINDLE READER REVIEW
This is my third Jane E James review this year for Joffe (rhymes with coffee) books…the first, “Her Second Husband”, only merited three stars but then I awarded full marks to her September release “Not My Child”.
Like that cracking read this stand alone novel divides it’s chapters alternately between lead characters, in this instance Mother and Daughter “Beth” and “Cerys”. The action has moved away from the Peterborough area of Eastern England to a Welsh farm set high in the Brecon Beacons.
Ms James likes to take a normal family and stick a massive spanner in the works – this time The Son-in-Law of the title happens to be the former husband…ignore the implausibility of his hooking up with the daughter within months of the divorce, getting her pregnant and marrying her…suspend belief that they would then find themselves sharing the remote farmhouse as they await the baby’s arrival.
The alternate views paint very vivid pictures of how each of the lead women views events centred around their feelings for Brad Pitt lookalike Luke (oh yeah, another stretch of the imagination there – all the moreso given how unfeminine Beth is painted – to this point at least, come Chapter 26 and there’s a fresh interpretation).
The cover claims it’s a totally addictive tale with a shocking twist – I certainly ploughed on but at times in the opening quarter I felt like the needle was scratched on the record as we regurgitated feelings from both perspectives but I can’t say I was “totally addicted” as I certainly skim read quite often seeking something significant…Chapter 18 for instance delivers an unexpected – and given the context – shocking twist…I also slowed down around Chapters 33/34 so I didn’t miss any nuances during the Christmas Day from Hell…and let me tell you there is a shocking twist even before the Turkey gets carved!
I did little skimming through the second half as the story unfolds to a grizzly climax, with plentiful twists, some of which I saw coming but remained satisfying in context. Theres a lot to take on board over the closing chapters but, despite some scepticism on my part the plausibility just about stands up.
I’m wondering what twisted relationships Ms James will come up with next …I think I’m a fan!

Beth’s pregnant daughter Cerys arrives home at their family farm Pen-y-Bryn with her new husband Luke. Beth wants to keep an eye on Luke who she doesn’t trust and invites them to move in with her as he’s her ex-husband she divorced two years ago. It’s obvious that Luke has a reason for marrying Cerys and Beth intends to find out what it is.
‘The Son-in-Law’ is a psychological thriller that’s told in alternate chapters by Beth and Cerys. It’s an entertaining read with a well-thought-out intriguing plot that has its fair share of surprises and unexpected twists. For a story I considered to be a bit slow to get going, it gradually improves until I’ve been unable to stop reading, the confrontational ending is reached where long-buried secrets are revealed and retribution meted out.
