The Sophomore is the incredibly new addictive read by Monica Murphy, and it is the second book in the College Years Series.
Murphy knows exactly how to capture teenage angst, lust and the dreamy pangs of first love. When reading, I felt instantly nostalgic of my university years, for Murphy’s characters all have that essence of having no real life commitments, and are young and carefree.
Jackson Rivers is the boy with soul. He’s a singer, songwriter and is the boy that Ellie has lusted after for more years than she should be able to count. She provides him with comfort, support, and is always the girl he turns to. But despite their close connection, Jackson never seems to want to take it further to Ellie’s dismay. But what happens when the girl who has lusted after you suddenly grows a backbone and wises up?
Envy isn’t a good look for Jackson, he’s usually the one to call the shots and keep Ellie exactly where he wants her, so when she suddenly gains confidence, and more realisation of how he really works, it threatens all that Jackson has become comfortable with. Can Jackson finally admit to Ellie what he is trying hard to avoid? Or will it all end in tears?
I adored this book, Jackson has been my favourite from the moment Murphy introduced him. Ellie is relatable and you enjoy witnessing her journey of confidence and realisation. The two are flirty, frustrated but also their relationship is totally believable and addictive.
This is a perfect read for those who love romances, and series which will keep you on your toes. It was a complete page Turner which had me reading until late.

????????????????
I wasn’t expecting to like Jackson as I thought he just messing Ellie about. But I ended up liking him.
I thought Ellie should have been stronger but I enjoyed the read.
It was great to see her come out and see him adjust.
I received an advanced copy for an honest review.

Well Monica Murphy did the impossible. She made me love Jackson Rivers! After meeting Jackson in previous books from this author, I wasn’t so sure I could ever like him. Jackson just seemed to be a selfish wannabe rock star who treated Ellie terribly. I just couldn’t see a future for the couple and Ellie deserved so much better. However, to my surprise, Jackson turned out to a bit of a romantic and by the final chapters, I found myself swooning over him and the way he realised his love for Ellie. I just loved Jackson’s character development and how his relationship with Ellie blossomed into something special. I also loved getting to know Ellie better. She was a really sweet & likeable girl and I was happy that her dreams were coming true. This story was made even better by a beautiful epilogue that resulted in a big cheesy grin on my face.

Ellie and Jackson. I have such a deep love and appreciation for these two. I have felt that they have more to them than was stated in the first book of this series and I was right!
Ellie has always loved Jackson but yet he just seemed to be oblivious – this frustrated me but also at the same time kept me reading and wondering what was going to happen next. There is this shy and sweet nature when it comes to Ellie – makes me want to protect her from angst and pain.
Jackson – honestly I wanted to throttle him many times but once he realised that he did have feelings for her – my mood changed to ‘go and get her’. He’s frustrating but he’s also very divided by what he wants and what he believes he can have. He’s stuck in between two worlds and doesn’t quite know how to have the best of both or if he can even have both.
I definitely recommend this story, and I recommend all books by Monica because they’re addicting and so you do not want to miss anything!

I love this series! I love this trope! I love Jackson & Ellie!
Jackson who on the outside has so much, yet he longs for things he can’t have and is insecure in what he does.
Ellie though shy has the backbone to know what she wants and be strong for Jackson even if he’s unsure about himself.
Reading their journey was a treat, I couldn’t sleep just had to finish it. ????????????

The Sophomore is the second book in Monica Murphy’s College Years series and is Jackson and Ellie’s complicated story.
Ellie and Jackson have known each other for a few years and Ellie has been waiting for Jackson to notice her and realise they should be more than friends, ever since.
“Jackson isn’t interested in me like that. In his eyes, I’m a friend. Nothing more. Even if I desperately want there to be.”
Ellie is Jackson’s biggest cheerleader, biggest fan and is there for him no matter what, but Jackson isn’t there for Ellie like she is for him.
Ellie realises this has been going on long enough, he either notices her and takes things further between them or she walks away. She can’t keep seeing him with other girls when she desperately wants to be the only one he wants.
But Jackson sees Ellie, wants more with Ellie but he’s worried that he’s not good enough for her and will ruin things between them and lose their friendship for good.
Can Jackson move past his fears and finally get the girl or will the time he wasted trying to figure things out mean he’s too late and Ellie has moved on?

Aw this was a super cute book! It follows Jackson and Ellie, two friends who have a complicated friendship!
Ellie was super sweet and had such good growth throughout this book! She started off allowing Jackson to take advantage of her feelings and her kindness but by the end she went after she wanted, was completely confident in herself and so much happier!
Jackson also grew sooo much! He was very arrogant, egotistical and selfish to begin with but as time went on and he realised his feelings for Ellie he because caring and compassionate! I really enjoyed watching him change and grow up!
This was a sweet, easy read with a lovely HEA ????
