The Soul of a Tree: A Master Woodworkers Reflections
£34.20£39.90 (-14%)
A beautiful book in which this remarkable Japanese American craftsman and philosopher impresses us with his devotion to discovering the inherent beauty of wood so that noble trees might have a second life as furniture. The first part of this meditative book reveals the development of Nakashima as a spiritual artist and the influence of life in an Indian ashram in the 1930’s. The second reveals the inner truth and nature of the different trees with which he works, while the third explores the skills by which the wood is reborn as furniture.

I bought this for my brother who is a cabinet maker and he loves it, I had a wee peek before I sent it, the story is amazing and really interesting. I read an article about his daughter and searched out the book. It is beautiful and makes you glad that people make furniture like this.

It is hard buying books online as it is so different to going to a book shop and flipping through the pages to get an essence of what the book is about. As such it is always a gamble.
This book went beyond my expectations. The narrative of how the artist evolved his work with wood is fascinating and inspirational. It it recounted in a way that allows you to apply your own life experiences to the practice and evolution of your own art. I particularly liked the way that he works with the wood allowing it to tell him how to cut and reshape it into an item of even greater beauty.
There were less photographs than I expected although the number of drawings and illustrations more than made up for that. The pictures that were included are again inspirational and offer plenty of new ideas for both newcomers and old timers to the craft of wood.
The Book Depository who supplied the book were also excellent. Unfortunately the first attempt at sending the book to me ended in tragedy. The delivery driver didn’t let us know that anything had been delivered and in fact left it outside where it got very very wet. I contacted The Book Depository showing them pictures of the now very wrinkly water damaged book and didn’t hesitate to send a replacement which arrived much much quicker than expected. Can’t praise businesses enough for doing things like this. I will be making sure that I favour this book supplier in the future as a result. Thank you.

Unhestiatingly recommended on three counts – beautiful book production, if you like furniture, architecture or wood working and, if like the tactile nature of wood. This book was a labour of love and it shows. A must have.
