I always suspected my daughter was on the spectrum but after years of bullying resulting in us deciding to move schools in the 1st lockdown combined with starting a new school with additional lockdowns and the in and out of school my daughter mental health and “meltdowns” really brought it all to the surface. As I now try to.navigate the overloaded referal system I felt my daughter just needed answers to why she felt the way she did about her gender identity, daily sensory overloads, repultion to certain textures, foods, smells and constant headaches and exhaustion, and trying to cope with her anger and intolerance of others…… she read this book in 1 day.
The book offers tips, explanations, product suggestions which shes found useful and also things she hadnt mentioned to me like tics she had been surpressing, made sense to her too.
As my daughter hates anything “girly” I was worried she wouldn’t want to read it as it said a “girls” survival… on the cover, but the book offers advice on personal hygene, menstrual cycle & emotions which shes found useful. My daughters very articulate and advanced for her years but did have to ask me what several words meant.

I scanned this book before I was going to give to my daughter to read and I have decided not to share it with her. Initially I was quite impressed with the book as it came across as the general feelings that could be felt by some people. What I did not like about it was the chapter on crushes and dating which implies that sexual abuse is common in girls. The following chapter discusses gender identity, which is absolutely fine, however I feel this could be touched on but the depth it goes into almost implies that being trans goes hand in hand with autism. Clearly this is a topic that needs to be covered, I just feel it may cause further confusion and anxiety if it was not something that child was feeling prior to reading the book. Could be a useful book for some children but on this occasion I am returning.

I the father of a recently identified Aspie boy and I bought this book to have a “testimony from the inside”. I mean : what to expect for my boy in the future years and particularly for his life in school, what do I have to be aware of…. The book is effectively wrote from and for a girl point of view, but I have to say that, after all obviously, it perfectly works for a boy. And after all even the period chapter is always a good thing to think and know ^_^ For me I simply have thought about different but similar problems for boys and it was absolutely perfect.
The book in itself is direct and cristal clear, it’s a joy to read and understand.
Definitevely a must read for girls, boys, parents and teachers. Read it !

Read this book a chapter at a time alongside my teenage daughter who recently received an high functioning autism diagnosis. Very useful tool to start discussions and understand the diagnosis and what it means for her.

It was recommended by women in an autistic group I’m, for me to buy my daughter (I’m a single parent as well), to help her understand herself.
After, she identified as being autistic, subsequently confirmed by diagnosis. Finding out she was, has been a massive help to her!
Now going to get another copy for my other daughter as this one has been lost, and I suspect she may be autistic as well.

I am so glad I came across this wonderful book. It really helped me to understand my daughter’s sensory problems, her struggles, her explosive reactions to certain things. I feel I can finally help my daughter to feel happy and be herself. What a wonderful book written by an autistic girl with practical guidance to survive and be happy in the world. Highly recommend to everyone who wants to understand about autistic girls. It should be in every school library.

Just finished ‘The Spectrum Girls Guide – How to grow up Awesome and Autistic, written by Siena Castellon who was the MD105 Lions Young Ambassador from 2019.
All I can say is ‘wow’ I thought I was pretty clued up about Autism and other SEN conditions but this book has opened my eyes.
Siena’s writing style is easy to understand and she has a fountain of knowledge.
The book is organised into short chapters with plenty of extremely helpful hints and tips and written in a font more suitable for dyslexics.
I would highly recommend it to everyone!
It would help people understand others so much. Even if you are not a teacher or parent, it really is worth a read.
