It is true that our world of work has experienced a dramatic shift over the years, a move from the very linear ‘staircase’ career of our parents and past generations, to a modern ‘squiggly’ one- unpredictable, fluid not fixed and ever-fluctuating. Can you relate to this? The story of this book and I began when I started questioning my own squiggly career during my maternity leave and how I felt an embracing of it might support my newfound values and personal goal for life-long learning ????
This book couldn’t have been read at a better time for me or for any other person facing a career conundrum. The Squiggly Career is a practical handbook filled with tools, research, actionable tips and a healthy mix of examples drawn from the author’s experiences.
Focusing on five core skills that the authors have identified, the book helps you to firstly embrace then scale your squiggle by considering your:
???? Super strengths
???? Values
???? Confidence
???? Networks
???? and Future Possibilities.
Throughout the book you are encouraged to take active ownership, not only through the completing of the many exercises it provides but by changing your mindset to a ‘growth mindset’.
That being said, this isn’t a light read by the beach. For me, you’d need a writing surface, a couple of highlighters and a sharpened pencil. What I enjoyed most was the super useful chapter summaries as well as the suggestions that go beyond the page such as vision boards and personal manifestos.
It might sound extensive but this book deserves this labour. Question is, are you ready to invest the time, energy and effort into your career future now? I recommend this book to everyone I know!

During times of significant change, this book (and the weekly podcasts) helped me to embrace the ‘squiggles’, understand what really mattered to me, clarify my strengths and discover possibilities. It has recharged my career and really empowered me. I also recommend ‘You Coach You’. Thank you Helen and Sarah, your work is truly inspiring!

There are lots of reasons to love this book but for me, the 3 things i love most are:
* Without question, Helen and Sarah both know their stuff but more than that, I got the feeling that Helen and Sarah care deeply about the reader and the tone and style is really supportive of the reader taking action with the knowledge contained within the book
* It is a book you will keep coming back to becasue it’s easy to read, super practical, tangiable which all make it accessible to many
* It is the first business book in a long, long time that i have read cover to cover and keep going back to – it’s one that although only a few months old is already looking a bit dog earred….a sign of a great book!

I really enjoyed this book! With the many changes we experience in our working lives, it serves as a nice guide. The authors are almost audible and it prompted me to start listening to their Squiggly Careers podcast- also recommended if you need some help with the daily grind.
It does require the reader to reflect and do certain exercises, which may not be everyone’s cup of tea but is more upbeat and practical than many of these books on the market.

My company put all employees through the course on which this book is built, though the book contains quite a bit more than could be covered in the time available for the course.
It contains the stuff I wish I had known in the first years of my career. Even though I am in the last decade of my career I can honestly say that the lessons in this book have just as much impact. I’ve just got less time to take advantage of what I’ve learned.
Squiggly Careers is different from most of the business books I have read. Most of them are “This worked for ME, it’ll work for you”!
The book isn’t like that. It is all about YOU and YOUR values YOUR strengths, YOUR confidence and how YOU connect with other people. It contains a number of techniques to help you find what your values and strengths are and you may be surprised at what you find out about yourself.
Understanding your values will help you understand why you do or don’t gel with colleagues, feel part of the culture etc.
The exercises to identify your super strengths were real eye openers for me and very affective.
The section on “Networking” and understanding where you are across the 4 categories (Consumer, Contributed, Connecter, Creator) was particularly interesting. I recommend checking your assessment of where you place yourself on this scale with someone who knows you well. This is especially true if you lack self confidence.
As I’ve already said I wish I’d known this stuff at the beginning of my career. For that reason I’ve bought 4 copies of this book near the end of may career to give to my nieces so they can be in the best position at the start of theirs.
I would love to see the lessons in this book adapted for schools careers lessons, people being helped by The Princes Trust, and people who have gone through the prison system and want to make a fresh start.

As someone who is struggling with plotting out a career pathway at the moment this book is brilliant at enabling you to highlight the skills and values that you have to help point you in the right direction. Conventional careers are a thing of the past and this book is perfect for those with concerns that their career path is already pre-determined or those like me who know you want to change, but aren’t too sure how to make the right career change. Plenty of self reflection tasks which helped identify what I believe I’m good at and what I should look for in my career. Can’t recommend this book enough and I’ll 100% be picking it back up to check on my progress.
