The Teaching Delusion 3: Power Up Your Pedagogy

Hands up if you’ve ever been given lesson observation feedback that you didn’t understand, didn’t agree with, or just thought was plain rubbish. If your hand is in the air, you’re in good company! When it comes to teachers receiving high-quality feedback that helps them improve their teaching, we have a serious issue in our schools. Teachers want to improve their teaching. They embrace any opportunity to learn. They want other professionals to watch them teach and to get into conversations about developing their practice. What they don’t want is to be criticised, patronised, sent down blind alleys, or left utterly confused. Those who’ve been giving feedback telling teachers to ‘differentiate more’, ‘talk less’, or ‘let students lead their own learning’ have a lot to answer for. The Teaching Delusion 3: Power Up Your Pedagogy has been written to address the issue of teachers receiving poor feedback in our schools. As a self-improvement and coaching resource, it is essential reading for all teachers and school leaders. Through a detailed exploration of 12 key elements of pedagogy, author Bruce Robertson sets out a clear, researched-informed guide to improving pedagogy in every classroom, across every school. By highlighting key features of effective practice and a broad range of techniques teachers can focus on developing, this practical guidebook will be valued by professionals in all sectors, regardless of experience. The Teaching Delusion 3: Power Up Your Pedagogy completes The Teaching Delusion trilogy with a bang!

As the person in charge of CPD at school I have found this book invaluable. The chapters on direct and explicit teaching and questioning have shaped so many of our CPD sessions.

As a former headteacher, I just wish I had had this book to lead staff development. It’s so clear, offers strategies which work and supports teachers to improve their teaching in a way which is encouraging and inspiring. When I was a class teacher myself, I would have used this constantly and would have been a better teacher by applying the techniques. Brilliant!

I read an enormous number of books in this particular area but The Teaching Delusion 3 by Bruce Robertson is one of the best books on pedagogy I’ve read in years. Why? Because he brings together the most up-to-date research on how students learn most effectively with a guide to practical and compassionate implementation in the classroom. Highly recommended!

I’d suggest you buy three copies of this book. Buy two for yourself – you’ll open the first copy so often it may fall apart. Buy a third for a colleague, choose a section and do some professional development together around it. It’s that useful. Full of well rehearsed good practice and trusted techniques it’s like penicillin for every teaching problem. Ok it’s just a metaphor – and since I’m allergic to penicillin perhaps not a great one – but this book is such a gem. You’ll have so many ‘light bulb’ moments when you read it you’ll think you’re in Blackpool. Buy it.

This book will definitely make you a better teacher! Written in an engaging style, Bruce outlines 10 areas that teachers can focus on to improve their practice, using examples from various subject areas. This book is amazingly useful for teachers looking to improve their practice, and also teachers working in a mentor/coach role.

This book breaks down the twelve most important pedagogical principles and is jam-packed with practical ideas associated with each. Its spine is already cracked in many places, and if I’m ever feeling stuck in a bit of a rut of doing the same things over and over again, it gives me a shake-up.

A fantastic read! If you want lots of easy to implement practical techniques this is the book for you! The power up prompts and trusted techniques are brilliant and can easily be implemented through traditional CPD or used with instructional coaching. Highly recommend.
