It’s hard to work out whether John is a creative genius or is just completely insane.

One thing for sure though is that their is nothing else out their that comes close to making me laugh out loud, compared to this book.

If you find unexplained random ramblings, as funny as I do, then you’ll love this book!

I laughed out loud at plenty of points when reading this, so many of the one liners were so on point and so uniquely hilarious. It was absurd, stupid and made no sense- which is mostly how I like my simpsons episodes. However even for me the fact that the story was less than a side note made it hard to keep up with- I mean how many ways does Frank Burly need to get beaten up?

I suppose I should start by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed this book, hence the five stars. You can hear the spark of seasons 3-8 Simpsons running through it. The humour in this book dances with the good simpsons, even though it’s a completely different setting. I do feel it could all have been wrapped up maybe 20 pages earlier. You do get a sense that the writer began to sober up towards the end of the book. The last few chapters are a little phoned in compared to the hilarity and genius of the turn of phrase in the first half of the book. It’s definitely a book I’ll read again though, in the same vein of how I cycle through seasons 3-8 of the simpsons in a systematic fashion. Wholly recommended

The writer of so many of the best Simpsons episodes offers a delightfully ridiculous literary trip In this, the first of his pseudo-noir Frank Burly novels. If you want serious noir, go pick up Raymond Chandler. If you want coherent narratives, try virtually anywhere else. But if you want to lose yourself in hilarious stream of consciousness adventure, this is what you need to read.

This book is everything I hoped it would be. It’s packed full of words and it makes that ft, ft, ft, ft, sound when you flick the pages quickly. Have read some of it in-between balancing that short table leg in the kitchen and I’ve got a suspicion it’s very, very entertaining… but I can’t be sure, so try it yourself.

It was brilliant. I heartily recommend it! Mainly because it is so very funny. The story of an incompetent detective who gets a weird case (containing a time machine).

It read like a cartoon between Simpsons and Roger Rabbit with too much violence. It could be a draft plot for a good book. I don’t think it was well written. I wouldn’t recommend it to any age of reader. If the author wasn’t high profile I don’t think it would have been published. Obviously not to my taste.

…and you’ll find a great description of John Swartzwelder’s brilliant comedic mind. If you fancy reading something light, relentlessly silly, and borderline insane, this is a great book to pick up.

Note: Swartzwelder was only one brain in The Simpsons’s writing room, so don’t expect an expanded version of the show’s voice. There are no well-rounded characters to be found here (there’s barely any characters at all), no emotional arcs, no keen insight into the human condition, no witty comments on today’s society, it’s just pure, unadulterated, silliness.

And if you’re in the mood for that, this is the book for you.
