This book is ok – it does indeed list a series of exercises you can do with dumbbells, I suppose what it says on the tin. However, there is very little beyond this in terms of how to apply them in a plan or what specifically they do and nor is it particularly comprehensive in terms of the exercise it includes. For example, it includes two bicep curls but fails to mention the difference between them in terms of muscle activation – and doesn’t mention anything of hammer curls, concentration curls etc.

Further, there is hardly any mention or guidance as to how each exercise would fit into a plan – what kind of weight/ rep range for a given exercise, what exercises/ muscle groups to do the same workout etc.

It’s alright but there are better books.

Good book for overall work out programme – simple and easy to follow.
Sometimes I found the author a bit too self-righteous, but perhaps that’s just his style…

However if you want something more serious and specialised, with details of muscle groups being worked and programmes geared to specific sports, then go for the book by DELAVIER which is excellent.

A lot of good ideas both for the beginner and long-time self-trainer. Any book on exercise is a welcome thing these days – this one is better than most and I have found it very useful indeed. If you want a start with dumbbell and a few good bodyweight exercises, this is the one for you.

Do not by the kindle version. you may well want to get the paper copy instead. The pictures and tables on the kindle are too small and I found it impossible to use. Despite this Amazon refused me a refund. Nevertheless five stars for the paper copy which I purchased seperatly.

This is possibly not the book for you if you are looking for a hard core bodybuilding programme. However, if you are looking to incorporate dumbbells into your overall fitness regime this could be just what you are looking for.

There is a very clear introduction to exercising with dumbbells which, despite my many years experience of training and exercise, managed to make the subject fresh and provided me with new information. The illustrated portfolio of moves together with the “tricks of the trade” is probably the next best thing to having a personal trainer to guide you. The “Trash! don’t waste your time” is extremely instructive and these have been jettisoned from my repertoire. The final section provides a variety of graded routines which should keep me busy for some time.

This book has vastly improved my exercise regime! Previously, I would make up my own routines, as I had nothing to follow at home (no connectivity). Since receiving this, I have seen appreciable results in both my physique and my stamina.
I use dumbbells primarily for weight-loss, and since I began using the exercises here, people have remarked how much weight I’ve lost. Brilliant! ????
