Apart from photos, descriptions and floor plans of many of the houses listed, there is a lot about the architectural styles, how Victorian segregation by class and gender affected the design and the engineering problems, such as heating and lighting these vast structures.

Very well written and informative. It is rather depressing reading but that is because of the tastelessness of Victorian building, not the fault of the author.
