Bought as a gift for a novice adult colourer, so I can’t comment on what it’s like to actually colour. It is an attractive book, the illustrations are interesting, as is the written info. But I would criticise the fact that it is very Colonial American, I wish it has included examples of furnishings etc. from other countries as well, I’m sure it would have appealed to a wider range of possible purchasers. I would add that the person I bought it for is enjoying colouring it.

Love this. American Victorian house. And garden. Do try this if you like old fashioned things. Each page tells you a little history of the rooms. I found pencils best for this book as felt tips leak through. I did try a peice of cardboard but it still leaked through spoiling the little story on the next page.

I brought his book at full price for my personal collection. I colour purely as a hobby, one that I put a lot of time and effort in to.
The Victorian House Colouring Book is another beautiful book by Dover. It uses the typical paper found in all of their books. Non perforated and of low-medium quality. Each illustration is single sided so almost all mediums can be used if you place paper between the pages to prevent any staining. There are 17 single page illustrations and 1 double page spread. Each illustration is surrounded by a border, the spine is also capable of laying very flat so there is no colouring issues close to it. On the opposing page, surrounded by a border of flowers each illustration comes with a detailed paragraph explaining the function of the room, the type of objects which would be found inside and a little history on the room itself.
The first illustration depicts the outside of a Victorian House. This is then followed by the following rooms: the front porch, the front hallway, the parlor, the library, the dining room, the kitchen, the gazebo and flower garden, the stairway, the master bedroom, the daughter’s bedroom, the son’s bedroom, the bathroom, the water closet, the attic, the basement, the carriage house and lastly, the front of the Victorian House again, this time in a stage of disrepair.
The house while styled in a Victorian era fashion lacks the details of tapestries, intricate furniture or wallpaper. There are very few excessively small details, the illustrations lean more towards simple clean lines.
Overall it’s a beautiful book giving a little glimpse in to the Victorian era of living.

This is a better book if you want to colour houses… Or rather room by room… You get the pic that’s on the cover and then a room by room to colour including a few pages that have been to for you incase you have a colour mind block lol… There is also a detailed account of each room so you can learn about the rooms as you colour them…good for kids learning about the Victorian age at school… Lots of detail in the pictures…19 pages to colour…including a double page spread of the gardens… I like this book and I would recommend it… I’ve coloured the cover pic and I like the result …..I decided to show you the garden picture as I think this gives you a good idea of the detailing through out the book… Hope this helps. I’ve counted the pages as one picture as there is one picture per double spread as the other side is information only the garden is a double… The other picture is my colouring of the front cover so you can see what I mean about picture and information.this is a full size book.

This is ok. Didn’t like having to use such dark colours – I did a bit of research on colours used by Victorians, and also remembered my Victorian grandparents, so was influenced by those memories. And of course the colouring book was all American, which was different in a lot of ways from English Victorian homes, although quite interesting. It would be nice if there were colouring books about our history (UK) for a change!

My girlfriend loves this book, really good quality paper and some lovely pictures to express your colour design prowess. This book is from the USA, therefore the Victorian house pictures are based on American Victorian houses. It is very nice, but it isn’t a representation of British Victorian décor.
Highly recommended though with really detailed designs, hope it will give you hours of enjoyment.

plenty of colouring for a beginner like me, used felt pens witch came through would recommend using colour pencils

This has to be my favourite colouring book. If you use felt tip pens (as I do) you won’t have to worry about them soaking through to the other page as it contains writing. When the book is open the page on the left gives a description of the room which is in the picture on the right hand side, I really enjoyed reading about all the different rooms aswell, so I read the book through before colouring just incase the pens went through and I couldn’t see it properly which wasn’t the case at all, even though they did come through a bit, the writing was still readable. I would buy this book again and I would HIGHLY recommend.
