Philip Larkin (1922-1985) remains England’s best-loved poet – a writer matchlessly capable of evoking his native land and of touching all readers from the most sophisticated intellectual to the proverbial common reader. The late John Betjeman observed that ‘this tenderly observant poet writes clearly, rhythmically, and thoughtfully about what all of us can understand’. Behind this modest description lies a poet who made greatness look, in Milton’s prescription, ‘simple, sensuous and passionate’.

This collection, first published in 1967, contains many of his best-loved poems, including The Whitsun Weddings, An Arundel Tomb, Days, Mr Bleaney and MCMXIV.

Read the poems – research the man – re-read. It is revelatory and the poems start to come alive. A master of metrics and complex rhymes, a mixture of repugnant attitudes and self-doubt. Complex, fascinating.

Nothing much to say about this – it is a copy of Larkin’s very famous poem. You either like his work or you don’t and I do. I have his complete works, but wanted a separate copy of this to carry around with me from time to time and it is suitable for my needs.

His poetry is interesting, but quite negative in regards to post-war Britain, a time of rationing and Americanized consumerism. The poetry is reflective, somewhat bitter and shrouded in loneliness. This is a collection of poetry that is beneficial for understanding the austere atmosphere of Larkin’s perspective. This book also has reasonable space for making annotations, so is worth a purchase for study or enjoyment.

Kinda boring poems but good if you’re studying lit like me. My dog attacked it as it came through the door though. Guess he isn’t a big fan of poetry. Makes sense as he can’t read.

(Currently doing A-Level studies on The Whitsun Weddings)

The book is rather short and doesn’t really go into enough detail in the poems. Most of the comments being made are ones that the reader most likely could come to by themselves.

The book is good enough just to recap on the poems and to get the ‘jist’ of the poems, But I wouldn’t recommend this for those who are die hard students.

My teacher and school hand out notes are much better than the book.

If its cheap, Purchase. If its expensive, Don’t bother.

I studied this in my first year of A-levels, while some of the poems are quite pessimistic they are also very profound. I truly think it’s worth reading.
