Emilia Ward lives quietly in suburban London with her husband and two children.

Just an ordinary wife and mother. But also a bestselling crime writer.

When she starts writing her tenth Detective Miranda Moody novel, however, life takes a frightening turn: an incident straight out of one of her novels occurs in real life.

Just an unsettling coincidence, she thinks. Until it happens again.

Then someone she knows dies exactly like a victim in the book she’s still writing . . .

Why is someone doing this?

How do they know what she is writing?

And how long before Emilia and her family are next?

I don’t know yet as I’ve only just started to read it.?

This is good. It isn’t wonderful – it squeaks into four stars from below rather than sliding from above – but still, it’s good. The protagonist is well drawn and believable, although some of those around her are a little one-dimensional. (I found Ottilie hard to believe, which is a pity because she plays a huge role in the denouement, and husband Elliott is a little far-fetched). Where the book scores is in its plotting: you read on despite occasional longueurs because you really do want to know how she’s going to unravel this very knotted yarn. The detective story within a detective story has become a popular motif and I can’t really say that Claire Douglas carries it off perfectly, but she makes a pretty good stab at it. Four stars. Though only just.

I have rated it 4 stars however I would give it 3.5. It was very confusing until halfway through when I finally worked out how all fitted together.. I’ve enjoyed all Claire’s other books but this isn’t a favourite I’m afraid which is a shame as I was really looking forward to it.

Interesting premise for a book but really poor execution.

The main character Emilia is your standard middle-class, pretentious, overly comforted woman who is so wet behind the ears it’s almost difficult to stomach. Almost every page talks about her precious children and amazing husband, or her lovely house and how much she loves it. Her idealistic, shallow and pointless existence is played out repeatedly.

The first thing that is seriously annoying about the book is the fact that it very quickly becomes apparent that the really bad things that are happening are all related to previous books that Emilia has written. Yet each chapter goes on and each time she’s really surprised by the next horrible thing. Seriously… isn’t it common sense once you’ve realised the pattern to then think about all the things you have written about, and then realise what could come next?! At this point I start to root for the murderer.

In fact in one section, on page 108 she even says “Of course, why didn’t she think of that? After all she wrote about it in the book Who Lies Beneath” – duhhhhh.

Emilia goes on to show her complete naivety and stupidity by commenting on the Police Officers: “He didn’t look strong enough to protect anyone” and regarding a female officer “Emilia thinks this woman can’t possibly understand how she is feeling – she doesn’t look older than 25”. That may be true Emilia… but I can guarantee you she has more sense, intelligence and wisdom than you ever will.

There are too many characters all of whom are written with motive and suspicion towards the end. This all creates false suspense as you know you’re being led down the wrong path and it’s all just superficial and the worst possible type of mystery. The characters are also clichéd and two dimensional, quickly becoming confusing. Her husband Elliot is a fantastic match for Emilia as he too is a total wet blanket.

Out of the 10 main characters, they all, at some point come under suspicion. Her stupidity includes witholding information from the Police even when her life is possibly in danger.

The story line includes ridiculous parts such as one of the officers involved following her twice and then revealing he was in a relationship with a murder victim. As Emilia’s life becomes more under threat and the harassment reaches its peak, Emilia tell us page-after-page how it’s all ok as she has her rape alarm in her pocket.

The plot becomes more complex, convoluted and difficult to follow as the book nears the final third. Additionally, it veers into complete absurdity, lacking any shred of credibility.

If it is not already clear, I did not enjoy this book and I do not recommend it. It’s a real shame as it was a very interesting idea.

I particularly liked the suspense and the way it was not possible to work out who was the murderer until the final chapter.

The book started a little slow but picked up to be fast paced towards the end of part 1 and into part 2. Well written and quite gripping.
For me it was a bit unbelievable towards the end, I didn’t find some of the character behaviour realistic but it made for good drama.
The epilogue was superfluous and a bit glib. But I enjoyed the read and felt involved in the plot throughout so a really good job overall.
