The World of Peter Rabbit is a beautiful collection of the original 23 Beatrix Potter tales. It comes in a delightful box adorned with some of the main characters from the stories. A really stunning presentation to enjoy and a good snug fit so the books sit well alongside each other. It is a wonderful boxed set to admire.
The books are productions of the original Warne version. They are lovely little books. Great for little hands and easy for a parent to read. Each of the books is hardcover with a wonderful jacket featuring the key character. Elegant and beautiful.
The stories themselves contain all those famous characters. Peter Rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Jeremy Fisher, Mrs Tiggywinkle and so on. Such memorable little people in animal form. The kinds of characters that are easy to remember and hand down from generation to generation. The anthropomophic characters are an absolute joy. Some of the perhaps lesser known characters are just as great as the famous ones. A character like Mr Jackson with his unique speech pattern is great fun for parent and child alike.
One slight surprise about the world of Peter Rabbit is the lack of crossover for many of the characters. Peter comes back a couple of times as do one or two others but they mostly seem to tell their tales without each other. There is a potential depth and richness that could have been added but given the legendary greatness of Beatrix Potter’s work she undoubtedly has done so much perfectly.
The stories themselves come in different forms. Most are adventures of ordinary days. Peter Rabbit’s trip to Mr McGregor’s garden or a day spent with Mrs Tiggywinkle the washer-woman are the ordinary world of mostly rural Britain at the start of the 20th Century given such sparkle. Other tales are much more involved. The Tailor of Gloucester or Little Pig Robinson are much longer and not really consumable in one sitting. They are slightly more mature stories given the magic of childhood but much more akin to books for older classifications. A final set includes the last two books in the series – these are colletions of fun rhymes. Great for the earliest of listeners.
All of the books have a strong moral tone. It is the Victorian British morality. A strong sense of guidance and right and wrong. It is occasionally a little jarring for an adult but part of the reason this set of books is so incredible is how strongly the morality appeals to the very young. Beatrix Potter’s characters have a clear understanding of their world and the importance of their behavioural codes. Such a wonderful understanding of children.
The writing is stylish and fun. It is much more complex than modern children’s stories but a parent should be able to adapt to the timbre of the words even if there are some terms no longer in regular use. The Tailor of Gloucester is a particular challenge with its description of old fashioned clothing etiquette.
The artwork is incredible. The characters are vivid and interesting. The artwork in most of the books takes up nearly half the space and it glorious to see. A very small child can instantly understand what’s going on from the action captured, making the words much easier to understand. These are some of the very best illustrations ever produced.
The Beatrix Potter collection in this beautiful flip-top case is a must. Every child needs to have these read to them at the earliest of ages. There is nothing quite like them. Beatrix Potter was an author of the highest order. Her works in full enrich the early years of a child’s life.

Timeless works from the genius Beatrix Potter. I like to read along with my children while watching the DVDs with Niamh Cusack or listening to the CDs with Patricia Routledge, Timothy West et al. The recent exhibition of her life and works at the V&A was tremendous. I particularly enjoyed her watercolours and drawings I of landscapes, plants, flowers and insects. An immensely talented woman who loved and preserved the English countryside and is enjoyed by millions worldwide.
