Think And Grow Rich

Napoleon Hill, America’s most beloved motivational author, devoted 25 years to finding out how the wealthy became that way. After interviewing over 500 of the most affluent men and women of his time, he uncovered the secret to great wealth based on the notion that if we can learn to think like the rich, we can start to behave like them. By understanding and applying the thirteen simple steps that constitute Hill’s formula, you can achieve your goals, change your life and join the ranks of the rich and successful.

In this updated edition, Dr. Arthur R. Pell provides examples of men and women who, in recent times, exemplify the principles that Hill promulgated. With the success stories of top achievers such as Bill Gates and Steven Spielberg, he proves that Hill’s philosophies are as valid today as they ever were.

Basically think of one thing you want to accomplish and plan to get it. Keep working at that one thing and check your notes.

There is a bit more to it but that is the gist of it.

    Worth a buy.

–Spoiler warning – even though its not a fiction book–

I’ve read many self improvement books:

    – Atomic Habits by James Clear
    – Deep Work by Cal Newport

But how do you encourage and motivate yourself to actually go out and study those books and follow through with the improvement in the first place?

TAGR teaches one how to cultivate a burning desire through auto-suggestion. Auto-suggestion is something you do naturally anyway – its the thoughts that come and go – the ones that linger become a part of your self-identity. Why not then take control of that process and bombard your psyche with the thoughts you want? And hence slowly shape your identity into what you want it to be?

This is the point of TAGR. It also explains that you can only be motivated and committed to goals if you have burning desire for them. Adopting this mentality forces you to discard the time wasting activities and ensure all of your effort is concentrated on the 1 burning desire.

The burning desire could be anything – ridding yourself of illness, getting into university or increasing your income. There’s a lot more to it than that and this book provides the frameworks for how one can spark that fire inside them and laser focussed concentration that then enables them to use the tools of life and other less generic books to achieve their objective. First you need the passion and burning urge, only then can you bring yourself to spend years achieving a goal.

I would say this book is a must try for everyone.

This book is more of a self-help/psychology type book than a purely economics/business based book. A lot of what this book mentions can be heard by modern finance guru youtubers (this book was of course written way before them). It was a book read and gives you some good principles to follow, but reading it won’t make you rich! (though that is the case with most, if not all, books)
