‘What’s sort of funny when something horrific happens is that nothing happens to the rest of the world. The cars still drive, the planes still fly…everything just continues. And that’s probably the best gift we have. Because, for the most part, there’s no right or wrong way to do things – life becomes whatever you make it’

I am not a big reader at all but when Ben West posted that he had written a book I ordered straight away. After following Ben for some time after losing my friend Olisa to suicide I knew this book would be groundbreaking. Not only does Ben write about the loss of his own brother but he highlights the crisis we are facing in the UK in a way that inspires you to want to make and see the changes we desperately need. The book is so so important for everyone to read I truly believe this can save lives. Since reading and recommending the book to friends and family I have started to have conversations I never thought I would. Thank you Ben for everything you’ve done and continue to do.

Ben has delivered a personal experience that engages the reader from the start. For those in crisis I believe his well thought out chapters – easy to read and with reminders to seek help – can indeed save lives. I hope every person in need has access to this book and I hope that those who think they will never have the need to read it will remember the title and Ben, should life ever put them or someone close to them in such an unhappy place. The book is about good times as well. Ben’s experience as with so many others experiencing tragedy, woke a passion and commitment to honour his brother and to hopefully change the outcome for others by highlighting the difficulties in getting help that many suffer. I hope every school and indeed family has a copy available to them.

Ben has written a truly soul-searching book which is brutally honest, harrowing, and incredibly insightful. It is extremely easy to read – it’s as if he is chatting to the reader. He writes very well, and there are many laugh-out-loud moments as he attempts to explain how he has navigated his way through the most painful and unexpected events of his life. It is packed with so much practical advice and positivity, and easy to implement self-help strategies, and those which may help a friend or loved one – many of which Ben has used himself. He explains psychological phenomena, such as fight or flight, brilliantly and in a way that is so easy to understand. You won’t be disappointed with this book. I’m getting all my family to read it as I think it’s so valuable that everyone has a better understanding of mental health – their own and others’. Congratulations Ben.

In the spirit of honesty, I was worried this may be another self-help book from a pleased author – Thank goodness I was SO wrong!
This book so beautifully combines a casually honest and funny viewpoint of traumatic events with vast wisdom and education with such a simple elegance. I read cover to cover without putting down and I really don’t enjoy reading… Never before have I related so much to a book and stranger’s experience, but Ben’s story of his experiences with grief, in such an open, honest and candid manner, reminded me that you are never alone in your feelings, which has hugely aided me in my own grief and trauma from similar experiences. This combined with hugely important discussions and resources for mental health management have honestly opened up a hope for humanity within me, that must and will be shared through the very easy reading of this book. How Ben has managed to write about complicated issues in a very uncomplicated and accessible way is wonderful. Thank you so much, Ben x

I read this book in a day. Started after lunch and finished by bed time. This book is so special. So honest. So raw, and funny and tragic and truly inspiring.
This book is about mental health and the need to change the lack of provision there is for suffers. It’s also about Ben and Sam and their family.
I’ve read a lot of books, many self help, trauma, relationship based books and this one without a shadow of a doubt is one of the best, if not THE best I’ve ever read. I will read it again. And again.
I am so immensely proud of Ben and cannot truly get my head round what he has been through and how remarkable he is. He is changing lives as he swore to Sam he would. I really cannot put into words the effect this book has had on me.

I’d like to title this as thank you…
This book is so well written. In more than one way. The author is so genuine and you can tell he has written this from the heart with great care. You almost feel like part of him whilst reading this. This hits you in so many ways as he knows how to relate to you without knowing you.
I really do love this book and I bought a copy for my younger brother who ironically is suffering from severe depression. My brother said the book is helping him and he’s enjoying reading the book too. It’s helping him aswell as me. So thank you.
