I loved Steve McHugh’s Hellequin Chronicles (if you haven’t read them, why not?) so was very interested in this new series. Off to an excellent start set on another planet and a cast of weird and wonderful characters. Thoroughly recommend and cannot wait for book 2.

Heroes, villains, humans, vampires and the best dog ever. Church is a good girl. This story gives a mystery, fights and the magic of vampires. All told with a humour that will make you grin.

Every damn time I read one of Steve McHugh’s books I get caught up in the story characters and world he reveals then get to the end and wanting to read book 2 and realise this is the first book in a new series and I have to wait! Get back to writing! otherwise I would definitely recommend this book which takes the usual vampire story and reimagines it very enjoyable

Just finished reading this book and heck yes! It was so much fun! It’s the kind of vampire books I like to read where the vampires do not feel apologetic for their nature, where there are politics and intrigues that get snuffed out in a most violently satisfying way. As many books do, it starts slow but soon gets complicated and more complicated and then action and then awesome fight scenes. I can’t wait to read what happens next.

I love the characters this guy creates and the humour that he injects into his writing. I am looking forward to a sequel. Unfortunately this book suffers from the same disease that infests modern publishing and that is a lack of PROOF READING. I know you have deadlines but please do better, it’s annoying. How hard is it to read through and correct the glaring mistakes.

I write reviews far more rarely than I ought to, but this book demands I take the time to put down a few words. I doubt I could do justice to the world Steve has woven here so I won’t even begin to describe the plot, beyond saying it’s an interesting twist on the vampire genre in general. The writing is definitely at the top end of Steve’s work, which is typically praiseworthy enough regardless. A couple of minor typos – tsk tsk Mr. McHugh – but nothing that spoils the read.
Thanks Steve. But if you’re reading this? Why are you wasting time you could be putting to good use writing the next in the series?
