Tilly and the Buttons: Stretch! offers perfect proof that easy-to-wear clothes can be seriously stylish with a collection of outfits that combine the comfort of stretch fabrics with Tilly Walnes’ signature look.

Even experienced stitchers are often wary of working with stretch knit fabrics, but in this book Tilly demystifies the techniques needed and shows how to sew stretchy makes on a regular sewing machine – no need for a fancy overlocker. However, if you are already an overlocker owner, the book offers a user-friendly introduction to threading and stitching with this machine too.

Aimed at dressmakers who have grasped the basics and want to expand their sewing horizons, Tilly’s tried-and-tested, learn-as-you-make approach is structured around five made-to-measure, speedy-to-sew garments. Tilly’s friendly instructions and the clear step-by-step photographs are accompanied by lots of tips and tricks to make your sewing a breeze, and the multiple variations and ideas will help you customise your garment to suit your own style.

The book includes complete, full-size patterns.

I had been looking for a book specifically written on the subject of sewing with stretch fabrics. I have been sewing for almost fifty years so I suppose I would be classed as experienced perhaps maybe more due to years of extending my ability and range of items made than actual skill set. When I first started sewing invisible zips didn’t exist and I learnt on a treadle machine concentrating manically to ensure my fingers stayed away from the needle. Stretch fabrics require a slightly different approach and that was my reason for purchasing a book specialising in this fabric. However and I apologise to Tilly for this, I am disappointed. It isn’t the writing style of the book that doesn’t appeal to me in fact I find this type of text, as if you are being spoken to, much more appealing than a rigid formal style, it is the patterns that leave me cold. When you are taught new skill sets via making up a pattern enclosed with the book you have to like and want to make that particular item of clothing. Sadly I don’t want to make any of these items and that is why I am suggesting my disappointment might be more age based. I always make up a toile to begin with to achieve a personalised fit. This process allows me to alter a design to suit myself however this process isn’t quite so straight forward when the patterns are scaled to allow for an element of stretch – my usual muslin/calico toile is out of the question. I couldn’t justify the cost of buying stretch fabric just for a toile. As patterns get increasingly more expensive I consider it a win win scenario when you buy a book and it also comes with four or five useful patterns. To this end I have bought several books recently based on a ‘capsule wardrobe’ and the enclosed patterns have been attractive, with a slight design edge and I have been delighted with my purchases. I am not ready to wear baggy, shapeless sack style stretch clothes but I would have preferred patterns that are slightly less predictable. Again I am probably not the youngest customer to buy this book. To finish off on a positive the paper, print and indeed the paper the patterns are printed on is of a high quality. I cannot comment on the making instructions or processes. Tilly, to attract more young people to this craft books with such a positive sew-jo message are essential and your blogs are very useful.

Got this for £12.99, it looks brand new though it states used. It was delivered within 24 hours. The book was worth buying for the advice on how to use a serger (overlocked) alone. Lots of advice, super easy to read instructions for the pattens (included) and lots of examples of how you could change the pattens to give the clothes a different look. Worth every penny!
