“Toddler Adoption” looks at the unique joys and challenges of adopting and parenting a toddler. When a child aged is adopted between the ages of 12 to 36 months, they often show signs of cognitive and emotional immaturity, which can cause behavioral and relational issues. This book offers support and practical tools to help parents prepare for and support the toddler’s transition between the familiar environment of their biological parent’s home or foster home to a new and unfamiliar one, and considers the issues that arise at different developmental stages. It highlights the challenges that parents are likely to encounter, but also gives positive guidance on how to overcome them. Written by a specialist in children’s development who is also an adoptive parent herself, this fully revised and updated edition of the go-to-source on adopting toddlers is essential reading for both parents and professionals working with adoptive families.

Really loved reading this book. I stumbled upon it 6 months into adopting a two year old and it made what we had experienced make a lot of sense. Lovely read.

We have just adopted a baby and a toddler and we would really endorse this book. It has helped us so much in terms of understanding issues of loss and attachment (which were never explained to us by the adoption agency). We found ourselves at a loss at one point about how to parent our toddler who was clearly expressing loss and displaying an insecure attachment. We would add that all adoption agencies in the UK should have this book and ensure all adoption workers read it and make reference to it when children of this age group are being adopted so the child, adopters and foster carers can be correctly prepared and transitions carried out in an evidence-based manner. This book really spoke to us and helped us to not feel so alone.

I found this book very useful in terms of stories and examples written by someone with experience in the family. Straightforward explanations of behaviour that make sense in layman’s terms though probably very useful to a professional I would think.

This book didn’t focus only on the struggles a child and family may face yet it didn’t ignore the difficulties either. This is a great book for those considering adopting a toddler and may also help family and friends to understand some of the challenges.

This is the best book I have found on toddler adoption. But it left me wanting to know more. What happens as these toddlers grow up? What is the range of reactions from existing siblings when a new sibling arrives, and tips on dealing with it? I have a son and my biggest concern with adopting a toddler is the impact on him, but the author of this book has not gone to a great level of detail on this subject.
