Tress of the Emerald Sea: A Cosmere Novel (Secret Projects Book 1)

£8.10

#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson expands his Cosmere universe shared by The Stormlight Archive and Mistborn with a new standalone novel for everyone who loved The Princess Bride.

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Note from Brandon:

I started writing this in secret, as a novel just for my wife. She urged me to share it with the world—and alongside three other secret novels, with the support of readers worldwide it grew into the biggest Kickstarter campaign of all time. I’m excited to present this first book to you at last: a different type of Brandon Sanderson story, one I wrote when there were no time constraints, no expectations, and no limits on my imagination. Come be part of the magic.

This book is best described as a gender-swapped Princess Bride. If you liked the film (more so than the book, since this doesn’t have anything to compare to all the “Morgenstern’s Estate” stuff Golding goes in for there) then you should like this too. It has the same slightly askew romanti-comical feel to it.

Although it does have some Sanderson-style logic/rules-based magic, it is also rather more fluid and dreamlike than his other stuff. “The Seethe” for example is very convenient but is completely unexplained.

My biggest gripe is with the UK publisher, as they omitted (for cost-saving reasons? legal issues?) the bespoke artwork which the US edition has, and which is specifically referenced by Sanderson in his introduction. I mean, if we just wanted the words we would have bought the kindle edition. Poor show. Otherwise well worth a read.

I could imagine someone not liking it, but that someone wasn’t me.

Just started to read this and so far the story is very good,it is a different kind of story that you would expect from this writer, but so far it makes you want to see where the story goes.
Like always the delivery was on time and packaged very well.

A fun and charming tale narrated by hoid, this is a fun and fluffy book that you can tell isn’t taking itself to seriously, great world building and magic system you have come to expect from sanderson, a nice pallet cleaner if your moving between series.

One of the greatest fantasy writers in the history of the English language delivers another astoundingly well written book, full of beautiful insights, delightful lines, and an incredibly unique world.

I must have highlighted around twenty passages in this book. Some just for the brilliance of the writing, and some for the profound insight into the human condition.

I’ve been reading fantasy all my life, but I’ve never read a book that made me sigh in pleasure the way this book has. The way it’s written… the way Brandon plays with the words, like they’re dancing for him. It’s so beautiful to read.

This is the writing equivalent of a skateboarder doing an impossible trick after they already won the competition. They do it because they can, because it’s fun, and it’s amazing to witness.

I read this in two sittings, and I’m amazed I was able to put it down at all. It will certainly not be the last time I read it. What a world. What a writer.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it over a couple of days during a difficult time. As an avid reader of Brandon Sanderson, I’ve really enjoyed the evolution and mystery behind the narrator. The book is whimsical, funny, exciting and even relatively deep in the off hand slices of philosophy cast out by the narrator. Well developed world building that creates a unique stage for the action to take place on. Tress is a character that I routed for and I enjoyed her successes. I’m looking forward to the next instalment of the secret projects and am forever grateful that one of my favourite authors remains so prolific.

All of Sanderson’s skill in story telling, but with more humour than you might be used to. A great read.

This book can be read as a standalone but as it is set within the cosmere it has some fun references. Love the concept and world building

Loved this book. It is best enjoyed if you have read his other books first (they are all brilliant so go and read them). However this book was so good that it inspired me to write the first review of anything I have ever read or purchased.
