Here is the ultimate, one-volume story of Turner’s life and work. Superb colour plates illuminate Turner’s range – dramatic views of the sea or mountains, sweeping landscapes, architecture, imaginary scenes from history and legend, panoramas of contemporary towns – while the fruits of his travels, not just over Britain but also in France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, are presented in the context of his life. In the most attractive work for a wide audience ever published, the text reveals the man, the illustrations his genius.

I bought this as a birthday present for my son, who lives in Spain, so it was a little time before I was able to ask his opinion…now I have it! He says that he would definitely give it a 5 star. He felt that it was full of interesting facts about Turner’s Life and his works which he did not know before…and discovered paintings he had not seen before. I chose Turner because I know that it is one of my son’s favourite painters. Having seen some of the other books I would recommend this. It is the most excellent value for money .

Being a massive Turner fan, I’m an enthusiast collector of books about his work. This one, I must say, it’s without any doubt the best of all. Perfect format, fantastic printing (which is very hard to achieve without distorting the magnificent colours of the original paintings) and a brilliant original investigation about his life is something that definitely you are not going to find in any other publication. Plus, is much cheaper via Amazon UK than at the very Tate Britain shop. Absolutely recommended.

Both a joy to look at and an informative biography.

The pictures are well reproduced and the text well written. All the more necessary after Mike Leigh’s travesty of a film! The Turner that emerges here is a complex and far from perfect in character but he was not a pervert or sexually abusive, as ML himself admits.

For ‘truth’ and visual pleasure read the book and avoid the film.

PS I should add liked Timothy Spall’s acting a great deal, just not the highly fictionalised script.

If you are a follower of Turner’s work this book is an excellent read, it also proves an eclectic mix of illustrations that are laid out with the appropriate text so one doesn’t need to search for them. Although I have read most books on this subject I found this one a useful edition, well written and well researched. Anyone who has seen the film Mr.Turner would find this book fills in missing links and sorts out the conjecture. If you like Turner, I would highly recommend it.

This book is great for antone who loves the work of Turner. The text is full of infomation and sources from the artists life and even goes into his practice as an artist, truley a beatuiful book.

The pictures are really clear and although nothing beats seeing his paintings in the flesh this book shows how amazing his work really is…includes quick pencil sketches, watercolours and his oil paintings.

Turner was a painter way ahead of his time – I love his work, especially his later, more impressionistic style. Andrew Wilton’s book is both a superb biography and a great catalogue of his work. The colour reproductions, on good quality paper, are good for a book of this size even if some of the colours seem a little muted compared to the originals – this, I assume, is down to limitations of the printing process. Even so, I rate this book 5 stars overall!

The best read on the market about a true Master and genius of his lifetime .
