I just felt moved to write a review as I am arriving at concept 17 – shape. That’s what I have been wondering about – how to create bold shapes in my images.
The authors have done an exceptional job in bringing ideas of design to the reader, which is applicable to woodblock printing, but goes far, far beyond that to all forms of art. I see what they mean in my photography, for example, and can now likely assess my paintings to see how and why some are successful, and others perhaps less so.
I deeply appreciate the generosity in showcasing other artists’ work, and humility in sharing their own work (also when not totally successful), which results in a rich feast of images that cannot help but inspire.
I strongly recommend this book.

This is a brilliant book, an unusual look at woodblock printing, often through the eyes and hands of Chinese artists, China being of course the home of the woodblock, it is the second book by the Merlyn and Rod team and a great companion to their first more ‘how to’ book, this is more of a how to think about printing book and will stand on my bookshelf in the great and comparable company of those classic and much mulled over art books, ‘The unknown Craftsman’ and ‘ The Beauty of Everyday Things’

So much to enjoy. Twenty Concepts in Woodblock Printing is such a generous book. I read it as a print lover rather than a printmaker and was captivated by the the exploration of the processes, conscious and unconscious, that underlie the making process. The text is both poetic and practical. The illustrations are wide ranging in place and time with a useful blend of the How and the Why both in relation to the artists’ own work and that of the many others that they include to illustrate the twenty concepts. I’ve come away enriched and enlightened and will be revisiting it often.

Well written and beautifully illustrated, this book adds another dimension to how-to-do-it manuals on printmaking.
