A beautiful, hardback picture book, Uncle Bobby’s Wedding is Sarah S. Brannen, and illustrated just gorgeously by Lucia Soto. This is such a glorious book to behold, the colours, the lines and shapes to the drawings, from the cover, throughout the story, and even to the patterned endpapers, all are really lovely. It’s a warm-hearted, kind tale of a young girl called Chloe, who loves spending time with her favourite uncle Bobby, and so when she finds out that he is going to get married, she’s scared that she’ll lose him. But she quickly understands that she’ll still have uncle Bobby in her life, and also a new uncle too, Jamie, his partner. It’s lovely to see this happy relationship represented here, and to read how happy Chloe is to be part of the wedding day too.

Great story. Lovely illustrations.

I love how the story is about a child who feels jealous about her favourite uncle getting married, and worried they won’t be able to spend so much time together. The fact he is getting married to a man is wonderfully not an issue at all, just as it should be ????.

Chloe’s Uncle Bobby is her favourite, and they have so much fun together. They row on the river, look at the stars, and best of all, fly kites. Then one day, Uncle Bobby says he is getting married to Jamie. Chloe is crushed. She is worried that if Uncle Bobby gets married he won’t want to have fun with her anymore.
But Bobby and Jamie prove her wrong, taking her on lovely days out and having a wonderful time. Chloe decides she wishes Jamie could be her uncle too, and he points out that she is about to get her wish. With a bit of help from Chloe the flower girl, they tie the knot and the three of them dance the night away.
I was aware when we got this book that it once depicted anthromorphic guinea pigs instead of people, and just couldn’t imagine how that worked. Having Googled and looked at some of the old illustrations I’m just so pleased it has been given a “glow up” as the humans in this book are so gorgeous. I love that this is an interracial couple, and I love that it is two men having a lovely time with a little girl, as historically I think this might have been avoided. Jamie looks like a great guy – affectionate, funny, and understanding, so I can see why Chloe is keen to have him as an uncle, and in fact, immediately acknowledges him at such after he and Bobby wed.
Although Chloe isn’t upset about who Bobby is marrying, her mum says something that would be equally as valid if she was: “when grown up people love each other that much, sometimes they get married.” And that’s what this book is about. Love.

What a fantastic story of changing relationships. I would happily use this story as a lesson stimulus in a circle time discussion. Highly recommended.
