Over the years I have helped out in my son’s sole trader busineds, so have picked up knowledge here and there, but I always knew there were gaps in knowledge and understanding.
This excellent book in the Dummies series is certainly filling in the gaps for me and it is so useful to refer to if I am unsure of anythig.
Clear sections make it easy to find chapters you need to become familiar and more confident with.
Knowledge is power – so they say

This is not a small business book keeping guide. Nor is it an investors guide to balance sheets. It is more aimed at managers in large corporations who need to understand what the finance department does, read and interpret management accounts and understand corporate jargon.

Understanding Business Accounting For Dummies – UK Paperback – 2 Jan 2018

    The book.
This book details UK accounting for business.

    Presentation.
It is written in the Dummies ‘assume very little ‘style and is well present3ed and logical. It can be used like a course or dipped into if you need to find a specific thing out.

    Content.
It is very comprehensive and goes through everything the small business owner needs to know. It covers accounting methods, tax, investments, planning, budgeting, international tax and trade plus many other interesting subjects. It has a comprehensive index so specific items are easy to find.

    Language.
The authors have done well in explaining the terminology used in business accounting. In fact the book is very well presented and it makes understand what most people find complicated quite easy. There are lots of tables, graphs and illustrations to support the text.

    Overall.
An excellent book about business accounting for the non-accountant. Hard to fault from my point of view.

by I Read, Therefore I Blog

I picked this up because my day job as a solicitor sometimes requires me to engage with accounts and although I did some accounts training as part of the professional qualification route, I did that a couple of decades ago and am quite rusty.

The book is designed to either dip in and out of it as needed or you can equally read it cover-to-cover (which is what I did). However, I think that it does help if you have had some prior experience of accounts before coming to this because it doesn’t take you from the very basics and does seem to assume a certain base level of knowledge. Also, if you’re a small business owner then there are some parts of this book – notably the section on financial reporting – that isn’t going to be of much use to you (although if you work for or with large companies, then it is great and helped break things down for me).

All in all, I found it useful in terms of helping me with my day job and if you have a role that involves dealing with accounts/finance – especially if it’s with a large company – then I think that you would get a lot from this.

This is quite a detailed and in-depth book on business accounting and, for me, I feel it is a bit too advanced to fit neatly into the for dummies stable. It is more of a text book for people who are learning the subject or working within an existing accounting system. On that level it is very good and gives an excellent grounding in the subject. It covers everything from basic bookkeeping to structuring of and reporting on a major business and does a great job. My daughter is studying business at university and she loves this book as a great support to her class texts.

A great Dummies Book for understanding the complexities of Business Accounting. I have worked in the finance sector for many years and have a fair degree of knowledge in finance processes and terminology. However, as I am now looking into qualifications in accountancy I knew that A) I needed to brush up on things and B) I needed to understand the things I have not needed to know in depth up until now. This book is good at breaking down sections and making them understandable, but even with accountancy knowledge not all areas are easy to grasp and require additional reading, for me at least.

A great book to help further your understanding of Business Accounting.

Very clear and easy to read. Filled with all the essentials you could want or need on the subject. BUT, where it falls down is that it is ALL theory and no practice. There are no exercises to consolidate what has been learned. This may be in a separate book, but that does not preclude this one from having a few exercises in the most important parts: the profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflow areas. This would have made all the difference to me. Accounting can be a very dry subject and needs something to make it a little more interesting. Nevertheless, the subject is dealt with very clearly in this book.

I’ve had this book a while and have only read the first 100 pages (of 400 ish total). I usually try reading it in the evening and keep nodding off. The title of this book made me think it was aimed at me and just what I was looking for but, simply speaking, I just find it too hard to wade through. So much of it doesn’t really apply to me (as an all round girl-friday/in-house bookkeeper/invoice sender and chaser/payroll/answer the phone/fix the printer and email type person for two small businesses) but when reading the chapter on compound interest and mortgages I wondered if I had picked up the wrong book? This book might contain the information I was looking for but unfortunately I haven’t found it in the first quarter.
