Untapped Potential: Born in Scotland, Found in the Royal Signals

“Untapped Potential follows George’s career in the army, from the age of 16 when he joined the Army Apprentices College, of which he became the Junior Regimental Sergeant Major, to the moment, 27 years later, that he reluctantly decided to leave.

The story, told with great frankness, relates the good times and the less good times, the ups and downs, the sad events as well as the happy ones; but the characteristic sense of humour is never far below the surface – indeed, seldom below it at all!

It is also an account that graphically illustrates what it was like to serve in the British Army at the time.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this absorbing book. I personally can empathise with much George has written. The humour (squadie variety), the pathos and the frankness is spot on. It more than illustrates the way things were during that period in the Army and reflects very accurately the way the Royal Corps of Signals approached their role. I found it a thoroughly good read and one I would strongly recommend. I do also urge George to continue writing.

Got this for Xmas off my son without him knowing that I’d crossed paths with George when I was “sent up” to 1 Div for a little while before returning to 22 Bde after which he became the Yeoman. This book offers a great insight not just into the Royal Signals but the army as a whole. It also demonstrates the necessary drive required for a career minded soldier…which I was not. Great read and a nice trip down memory lane with a lot of familiar names.

This is an easy and enjoyable read thanks to the honest and direct approach of the author who accurately reflects what it was like to serve in the Royal Signals in war and peace between the 1970s and the millennium. 5 stars.

Just finished reading this book about the author’s time in the British Army with the Royal Corps of Signals. A thoroughly enjoyable read written with skill, honesty and compassion; and the inevitable squaddie humor. If you are serving, have served in the Corps or are just interested in a soldier’s fantastic career who served with distinction in all that he did, then this book is for you. Highly recommended. Certa Cito.

This was not what I was expecting, and as much as I looked forward to a tale of success at all costs, I am very pleased to say I got more – much more. If you wish to see where focus, ambition and professionalism can lead, and then couple it to humility, mutual respect and empathy, then this is the book for you. George, I take my hat off to you. An excellent ‘can’t put it down’ from page one, it doesn’t matter if you have served or not. The career of this apprentice stonemason turned leader turned businessman is a must-read.

Reminded me of being an a/t in the early 70s (72b Bradley Sqn) and then onwards and upwards in BAOR et al. A good overall read, nice one George.

George and I joined the army on the same day, serving in the same squadron as young boys and leaving the former Army Apprentice College (AAC) Harrogate as young men. It was a delight to read his book and it returned many fine memories of the place, the experiences, the uniqueness of service language, but most of all the lifelong friendships we made whilst there.

Our career paths took slightly different directions, and we met again only recently as new authors via social media. George has not changed a bit; his drive and enthusiasm is still ever present. I for one am not in the slightest bit surprised that he achieved so much in his stellar military career and latterly in his business. The guy I remember from Harrogate was always going to do well, he excelled at everything he applied himself to, and was a great role model.

His book will give you a ‘boots on the ground’ view of what it is really like to be a soldier. Be prepared for the ups, downs, laughs and of course the inevitable loss of colleagues. I was proud to see that many of the guys I joined with were mentioned in the book, had also gone on to do great things and achieve accolades on the way. Testament to the value of everything Harrogate did for us.

What shines through time and time again is the acknowledgement George provides to those who have been part of his incredible journey, his friends, peers, managers but most of all his family.

Bravo George, and of course, I feel compelled to mention, ‘Certa Cito’!!
