Having booked a week’s holiday on a trip to Amsterdam to visit many museums including the Rijksmuseum I searched Amazon for an appropriate book and eventually chose this which has not disappointed. A wonderful introduction to the subject of the Golden Age of Dutch Art this is a continuing delight for me with pictures on one page and explanations on the other, the sort of book which is always a great pleasure to study. It helps explain why the Dutch painters are so celebrated and enduringly popular. My particular favourites are Rembrandt’s portraits which reveal so much of the sitter. Intervening centuries are irrelevant. Man is man in whatever era he/she lives with the same problems, joys and fears.

I purchased this for my wife in preparation for a surprise trip to Amsterdam, and it proved to be both an excellent introduction and a reservoir of happy memories.
