This book is very good value for the more experienced costume maker, as the scaling up is tricky, and the measurements given are for the slenderest of corseted maidens! Best is to draw up a modern body block and then place the seamlines as in the period patterns illustrated, and I have achieved excellent and wearable results doing this. Within the confines of a small number of years (almost all the patterns date from the 1890’s) a wide range of styles are illustrated, and these suit many plays by Ibsen, Shaw, Chekhov, Wilde and Strindberg, so it’s a useful book to have.

This book is brilliant for a victoriana enthusiast like myself, I have no complaints about the range of designs it provides. My only issue is that it is basically just a book of patterns with an introduction, it has minimal instructions on the actual sewing – so its going to take a fair amount of guess-work and trial and error as far as construction of the more complex dresses is concern!
That said its fine for my purposes as I won’t be attempting to make full dresses straight from the books but will be using the patterns to put together my own designs.

This book is limited in that it gives drawings of American fashions mainly for the latter part of the Victorian era and has limited pattern illustrations. For those who have experience of costume design and construction and are good sewers.

Very useful.

This bok has a range of patterns that will need to be scaled up, the designs are historically correct. Therefore suitable for theatrical work but not for steampunk/gothic as the designs will require skillb to adapt. But still gives a good historical perspective. A very usefull resource book.

The patternts are very nice and helpfull! A little bit confusing in terms of construction of the piece. I can recommend it!
