Obviously personal musical preference comes into the judging of this book so I won’t comment too much, but I found the C list really boring and similar, as opposed to the variety offered on the A and B lists. I would highly recommend buying the tracks from the ABRSM website, having a good listen and then deciding if you want to play any of the pieces before buying the book. I have decided to do 2 from this book and one from the rest of the syllabus. There is a nice tango and interesting trad Hungarian piece in the rest of the syllabus that need to be purchased separately. Practically, it is well laid out, lots of fingering suggestions and a bit of nice background info about the compositions. Anyone who’s gone through the grades knows what to expect, but definitely recommend a listen beforehand.

The copy I’ve received from the seller is a different cover to the one advertised. Not sure if they are different. My daughter said to order the one with red cover so hoping this green one is the same.

A full performance of this ambitious 60-movement work for solo viola takes somewhere in the region of 53-55 minutes. It begins with a deceptively simple “Sailor’s Song” followed by “Sarah’s Lullaby”. Perhaps the sailor and Sarah are on a boat together. We then get whisked through several diverse scenes including a country walk, a tango, a fire dance, an afternoon at the fair, and Caribbean Swing. Sometimes the juxtapositions are too jarring, for example the transition from The Little Trumpeter at the end of the second set of pieces (known, for some reason, as Grade 7) into the slightly pompous Waltz of Shall We Dance? which begins the “Grade 8” section. With the right pauses for effect however, I believe that these awkward corners can be navigated to make a semi-coherent whole work. Personal recommendations to enhance the character of each movement would be the inclusion of a smoking break after Blues for Charlie and perhaps a cheeky Morris Dance after the movement entitled May Morning. The Lament could be performed on one’s knees whilst shrouded in a cloak. My only real criticism would be that with the use of some key signatures involving up to 5 sharps and flats, some of these movements might be a little over-ambitious compared to mainstream viola repertoire, but I suppose that by having a game stab at it as well as leaping desperately up the fingerboard for the occasional almost unachievable high note it allows the most fundamental skill of viola playing to be showcased; that of being able to “blag it”.

Great selection of Grade 3 pieces which I am very much enjoying. Even if you don’t plan to take the exam, they are good for practice, as they teach a variety of techniques. The C.D is helpful to listen to, play along with both violin and piano part, and then play with just piano accompaniment. Really good as it gives you good idea of tempo and prepares you for the ‘big day!’ You can play with the C.D as many times as you want – and think how much it saves on pre-exam practices with a pianist!
