Violin Star offers beginner violinists a refreshing and inspirational choice of pieces to help build confidence and musical skills. The repertoire is imaginatively tailored to develop specific techniques through an exciting range of musical styles. The Student’s books contain the solo violin parts, along with colourful illustrations, activities and play-along tracks. The Accompaniment books include separate piano and violin accompaniments for every piece. Key features of the series: an approachable progression from beginner level to Grade 2, play-along tracks with each Student’s book, which contain specially, created instrumental arrangements to convey style and mood, original compositions and arrangements by Edward Huws Jones. Edward Huws Jones is a composer, arranger and music educationalist. He studied at the University of York and the Royal Academy of Music, and went on to develop extensive experience as a string teacher. He has travelled widely to research fiddle-playing styles, and his original compositions are firmly established in educational repertoire.

This book has 47 very simple violin parts which help a beginner with string crossing, simple fingering and the elements of reading music. The CD which comes with it has two versions of each part, the first part plus accompaniment (which in fact usually carries the real tune – the simple violin part is like a second violin part), the second accompaniment alone, so the young player can listen to it and then try it out, karaoke-fashion. This is good (and good fun) for practice. All of the tunes are attractive – eventually, for example, we’re on to a Bach Musette, Silent Night, some pleasant old country dances, a tango, Grieg’s Hall of the Mountain King (called ‘Trolls, Orcs and Goblins’ here) and The House of the Rising Sun. You can also buy another book separately with a piano accompaniment ; it”s good if you want the learner to play with a real person rather than a CD, but either works fine. The whole approach is clever and enjoyable, and it works. l
