Phaidon’s ‘Vitamin’ series has long proved an extraordinarily accurate predictor of tomorrow’s stars. This paperback edition of the latest volume is a cutting-edge and indispensable survey of the very best of contemporary drawing, as chosen by a panel of the world’s leading art experts
Over the past 50 years, drawing has been elevated from a supporting role to a primary medium, ranking alongside painting as a central art form. Since Phaidon’s publication of the first such surveys (Vitamin D in 2005 and D2 in 2013), contemporary artists have continued to explore drawing’s possibilities – from intimate to large-scale works, in a diversity of mark-making processes and materials. Vitamin D3 showcases more than 100 such artists, as nominated by a global panel of more than 70 international art experts.
The more than 70 nominators include such iconic figures as: Iwona Blazwick, Louisa Buck, Mark Coetzee, Thelma Golden, Laura Hoptman, Geeta Kapur, Pablo León de la Barra, Christine Macel, Kate Macfarlane, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Zoe Whitley.
The more than 100 selected artists include: Miriam Cahn, Robert Crumb, Tom Friedman, Tania Kovats, Claudette Johnson, Rashid Johnson, Otobong Nkanga, Toyin Ojih Odutola, Deanna Petherbridge, Christina Quarles, Qiu Zhijie, Nathaniel Mary Quinn, Wael Shawky, Emma Talbot, and Johanna Unzueta.

Incredible book, stunning quality and full of inspiring artists. Each artist has a detailed description explaining the concepts behind the work and full colour images printed on beautiful, high quality paper. Definitely worth investing in.

I didn’t find the selection of any special quality to be honest, a lot of it wasn’t drawing either which is weird, some paper pop ups were cool but printed in black and white… nope I returned it, was really not impressed

This paving slab-sized survey of the state of drawing around the world won’t disappoint.
Beautifully produced, it’s full of surprises as well as some gratifyingly covered favourites (of mine)
the world should get to know better. Sometimes, gigantic tomes like this fail because of their
(dare I say it?) dogmatic uniformity of approach, but the well-chosen nominators have come
up with a diversity which is a genuine delight. As are the well-researched (and bylined) bios, excellent reproduction
and layouts that are easy on the eye. My only complaint is the weight of the thing! Hats off to
the editors, this is an exciting book. You may not like everything in it – but there’s thrilling original thinking
on every page. And drawing is, after all, thinking.

Initially the book looked amazing. Beautiful purple cover under the dust jacket. Good size. Nicely printed. At first I thought oooh the paper edges are deckled like fancy artists paper, but it seems they have just been left untrimmed.
Had a quick scan of the index to see if any of the artists I love were included – Unfortunately not, but maybe I will find some new ones.
I am a little disappointed at the unfinished pages, but the kids had destroyed the box within minutes and I usually avoid the hassle of returning items at the best of times. The book was a lot cheaper than elsewhere and I wonder if it is a second/reject copy. Pics to illustrate.
