I have read quite a few books by Kate Mosse but for some reason I had not heard of this one, Warrior Queens and Quiet Revolutionaries. My friend told me that Kate was coming to our local theatre to give a talk about the book, so I bought it to try and read as much as possible before going. I can recommend seeing Kate talk if you have the opportunity, it was a fabulous show.
This is such an interesting read. It tells of the contribution that women have made throughout history from writers, scientists, politicians, lawyers and judges, activists, women of faith, inventors, queens, pirates, academics, doctors, leaders to artists, to every sphere of life, this book draws on all the women throughout history we should know about but who have disappeared from common knowledge. There are some well known figures but many, many who have disappeared from the pages of history.
Interspersed throughout the book is the story of Kate’s great grandmother Lily Watson, a famous and successful writer of her day. We learn about her life and how Kate has been on a quest to understand more about her life. How a well known and well published author can simply have disappeared from history.
This is an amazingly well researched book, very informative, inspirational and compelling. It is not a quick book to read, as the amount of information in this book is exceptional. Possibly a book that you would want to read on and off rather than in one sitting like a novel.

I enjoyed this book and am amazed at how many amazing women have contributed to history over the years that I’d never heard of. It took me a few chapters to get into due to the sheer number of names in there but thoroughly enjoyed learning so much about such inspiring women!

This book is brilliant because it has something very few books can achieve: it dazzles you. Everything Kate Mosse writes about each of those women is so interesting that I have already given it to two friends as birthday gifts, and I think it’s going to be one of my first choices for Christmas presents this year.
It doesn’t matter the genre of books you normally get excited about, and it doesn’t matter your religion (or absence of), I’ve found this book captivating, respectful and enlightening!
It’s an absolute delight.
