Watertight Marketing is a clear marketing book that provides the reader with an easily understood framework around which to build, or fix a marketing plan. It comes at the subject from the perspective of existing businesses wanting to improve their existing marketing, but the content is comprehensive enough to be equally useful for a brand new business venture. Many of the concepts seems like common sense, but it’s the kind of common sense that only seems obvious once you’ve been exposed to the idea. Nothing blew my mind, but most things had me nodding in agreement. I feel like marketing tactics that try to be tricky are a wild goose chase and, fortunately, nothing suggested in this book seems like it’s trying to be tricky. A general summation would be that it’s about trying to maximize chances with potential customers that, ultimately, can’t be controlled.

If you want to access the workbooks that are mentioned throughout then you’ll need to sign up for a free website membership. Personally, I found this to be a bit annoying. However, even though this is an attempt to up-sell related services to readers, it doesn’t negatively impact the content of the book as a standalone product.

The Kindle version has formatting issues that need addressing as other reviews have pointed out. Some paragraphs run off the end of the page, meaning that the last few words (or more? it’s hard to know) can’t be read in some cases. I don’t think I missed any important information because of this, but nevertheless it should be fixed.

What strikes me about this book are two things. Firstly, it is perfect for its intended audience – SME business owners who need to do marketing, and do it efficiently and effectively. There are well-written arguments for undertaking marketing (for those who might be a bit sceptical) and easy-to-read explanations of what it is and how it works best. Secondly, the unique thing about Watertight Marketing is the addition of the workbooks which you receive when you register your purchase. Not only do they provide frameworks to structure what you do, but they also give plenty of exercises to apply the thinking in the book, in a guided, practical and bespoke way. I have been a marketer for all my working life so I like to think I know a thing or two about winning new clients and protecting existing ones. As a business owner myself, I completed a few of these exercises and found them really useful and thought-provoking.

Bryony’s style is conversational and humorous in places, so it is not difficult to read quickly. The best way, I found, to make use of this book is to read it, then re-read and do the exercises as you go along. What you end up with is a business development plan which brings real clarity to your activities and helps you to decide which are most relevant. She is also very conscious of budgets, how to make them work well for you and recognises that, and I completely agree with this, you don’t need loads of money to put great marketing into place. Bryony combines her excellent knowledge and thinking with her own experience of growing businesses in what is a handbook that business owners will find absolutely invaluable.

I read a lot of marketing/ business books, but this is without doubt the best I have read. When I read books of this nature I can sometimes feel overwhelmed by the ideas that result from it and as a consequence almost don’t know where to start and end up getting lured back into the everyday jobs, rather than putting the bigger ideas into practice which will ultimately grow my business. But Watertight Marketing has clearly been structured with exactly that in mind- everything step is broken down, so that you can put together an action plan for working ON (rather than in!) your business, with quick wins that can be implemented relatively easily, as well as a longer term plan for the next 12 months.

This book has completely changed the way I approach marketing and I would without doubt recommend it to anyone looking to give their business a kick up the backside! I would definitely recommend registering your copy on the Watertight Marketing website too so that you can download the workbooks that accompany the book- they have been invaluable. I have also subsequently joined the ‘Watertight Webschool’ which is an online course working through the book in more detail, with weekly Q&A calls with the author, Bryony Thomas and that was without doubt the best marketing decision I’ve ever made!

A work of sheer, unparalleled marketing genius. This is a guide to do everything right in attracting and delighting (thereby keeping) customers. By everything, I do mean everything. There is no stone left unturned in the process of crafting a great marketing plan and brand identity, getting the attention and interest of the people you need to, laying out the best possible process for them to become customers, building your reputation in your marketplace and in fulfilling your customer’s expectations.

I’ve read and studied the works of some of the most famous, successful and experienced marketers around, but haven’t ever seen anything distilled so comprehensively like this in a way they makes it all instantly applicable. This applicability of every facet of the subject matter, and the fact that every suggestion is one you just know makes sense and is an optimal way to do things, puts this book in a league of its own.

It’s beautifully illustrated, wonderfully conceptualized through the illuminating metaphors that explain the whole marketing/sales process, and logically sequenced with the addition of the workbooks in a way that perfectly exemplifies everything it teaches in the book about messaging, sequencing, visual identity and making the right emotional connection.

It’s an absolute must have for anyone who wants to improve the functioning and success of their business.
