March 1942: As the war continues, wedding bells are ringing for the factory girls . . .

Sarah is happily settling into married life with new husband Stan, whilst Fran is busy planning her upcoming wedding to sweetheart Davey, who’s still conscripted to Bletchley Park. With limited resources, the girls must make do to create the perfect day.

Meanwhile, Beth has other things on her mind. She hasn’t heard from her husband Bob since he returned to the navy, and she’s starting to fear the worst. And new friend Viola is still recovering from a nasty accident.

Life on the home front can be challenging, but with the support of one another, the factory girls can get through anything.

Annie Clarke has an amazing gift of bringing her characters to life. I’ve been looking forward to reading the second of the three “factory girls” books and I wasn’t disappointed. Annie knows the things she writes about like the back of her hand and is an absolute master of dialogue, telling the story through what they say. To describe the books as “heartwarming” sounds trite, but you finish a book glad that there are decent people in this world who really care for each other! Am so looking forward to reading Christmas on the Home Front!

After reading the previous books by the same author – it was the next episode and hoping it will go on. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

…..and so looking forward to the next, out this month! When I started the first book, I wasn’t convinced I’d enjoy it but stuck with it and was hooked. It twists and weaves through the lives of the girls and the families, good times, bad times…and in the background there hangs a threat……

I have been waiting for this book since reading the last in the series and I wasn’t disappointed. I just love Annie Clarke’s style. I know I’ll be drawn into a different and almost forgotten way of life from the first page. I will ‘live’ the life of a miner, or a miner’s daughter, and experience the struggle of second world war life – eeking out meagre rations with creative recipes, weaving proddy rugs to make ends meet, never knowing when a loved one will be lost – in battle, or a pit accident, or a bombed house. We meet evacuees, some orphaned, we experience the kindness of strangers, and the cruelty of those who take advantage of misery and seek to destroy not mend – and the bravery of those who fight it, heedless to their own safety. A must read book – you won’t put it down.

This book speaks of times past and perhaps of values we might yet find again.

I have been longing to catch up with the girls and their lovely lads in Massingham. Wedding Bells is a much welcomed return to the wonderful spirit and camaraderie of the co-op, those up at the Hall, the men in the pit, and the women who worked in the munitions factories in the north east during WW2. They all have their troubles but come together to help each other get through them with dignity and pride.

The sense of place and historical detail shine through and you can tell the author really knows her stuff. There is such warmth in the writing that it carries you along – so much so that I feel that I know Fran and Sarah as well as I know my own friends.

I have laughed, I have cried and have found the biggest lumps in my throat as I read.

I am delighted to discover that the next book in the series is out in October for I always feel bereft when I come to the last page of any of Annie Clarke’s books.

Another great book in the Factory girls series.
The girls are all marrying their partners , except for Beth who was previously married,to Bob who was a sailor , he wrote to her to say he wanted a divorce, and when she went to visit him found that he was living with a nurse who was having his baby.
Ralph the mine bosses son came good in this book .
Looking forward to next book to see if he marries Viola
