Sri Lankan food is vibrant, fresh, light and delicious – a lively and colourful combination of spices, flavours and textures. Perfect for sharing and celebrating, now you can recreate it in your own kitchen with this unique collection of easy-to-use, innovative recipes inspired by the island.
In this, her first cookbook, chef Emily Dobbs shares her favourite Sri Lankan-inspired recipes for every meal and season, including chapters on breakfast (such as crispy egg hopper ‘pancakes’) short eats (think traditional street food like vadai and mutton rolls) and a large selection of meat, fish, fruit and vegetable curries and their accompaniments.
You’ll also find traditional and original puddings to finish off your meal (such as banana tarte tatin and papaya cake), tips on how to make your own curry using typical Sri Lankan ingredients, and stunning photography.

I ordered this book just before Halloween and got cracking almost immediately by making the pumpkin curry. It was delicious. I pureed the leftovers and added split red lentils to make the best lentil soup ever. Since then I’ve made the dhal, the egg curry and the Pul rotis. Everything I’ve made so far is delicious. The recipes are also simple, once you’ve made the roasted curry powder (which I now have a batch of). The book is beautifully presented with photos and personal detail added by the author, really conjuring up an evocative and idyllic ambience that transports you to Sri Lanka. I now want to visit the country.

My Dad is from Sri Lanka and I have been looking for a Sri Lankan cookbook for some time. It was serindipitous to come across this wonderful book, superbly written and comprehensively illustrated. Covers such a wide variety of dishes and accompanied by top tips for success in reproducing them. I got this to make my daughter food from where the Romans called ‘Serendivis’ and Arabic Traders called ‘Serandip’. Sri Lankan food is so nuanced and enjoyable but can be difficult to find good examples outside of Sri Lanka.

Bought after eating in a Sri Lankan restaurant. Hoping to cook some of the things I ate there.

A couple of years ago I spent a few months travelling in Sri Lanka and ordered this to try my hand at cooking some of the food I loved. When it arrived I read it cover to cover and felt so much nostalgia, it is a beautiful book full of fantastic recipes that are easy to follow and have been adapted to include easy to find ingredients.
I’m so pleased with this book and can’t wait to get cooking again.

The joy this book brought goes beyond words. Discovered out of no where the stories and recipes in this book take the reader on adventure after adventure with such colours and beauty it’s almost too good to be true.
The elegance and sheer rawness of the heart felt words used to describe the journey that make up the recipes in this book are like no other out there.
This book is without doubt one the greatest books ever written, this book is life changing.
Many thanks to the author for sharing so much and going above and beyond in creating such a beautiful piece of magical art. X

This book is brilliantly set out and has loads of easy to follow recipes. What I like is that there are hints on what to substitute if you don’t have some ingredients. The basic meat curry is a superb base for many dishes. The vegetarian & vegan dishes have gone down well with my family with the cashew curry a firm favourite. I have never cooked Sri Lankan food before getting this book and now it is never off my kitchen counter. Definitely recommended.
