Wicked!: The deliciously irreverent new chapter of The Rutshire Chronicles by Sunday Times bestselling author Jilly Cooper
£5.70
A tale of two schools…
At Bagley Hall, a notoriously wild, but increasingly academic, independent, crammed with the children of the famous, trouble is afoot. The ambitious and fatally attractive headmaster, Hengist Brett-Taylor, hatches a plan to share the facilities of his school with Larkminster Comprehensive – known locally, as ‘Larks’.
His reasons for doing so are purely financial, but he is encouraged by the opportunities the scheme gives him for frequent meetings with Janna Curtis, the dynamic new head of Larks, who has been drafted in to save what is a fast-sinking school from closure. Janna is young, pretty, enthusiastic and vastly brave – and she will do anything to rescue her demoralised, run-down and cash-strapped school.
Neither parents nor staff of either school are too keen on this radical move, although some can see the possible financial advantages. For the students, however, it offers great opportunities to get up to even more mayhem than usual.

I know I was ordering a used book but this was not really good enough to sell on as pages were falling out. Managed a sellotape repair but frustrated

I was delighted when Wicked came out because I’ve really enjoyed the Rutshire Chronicles from Riders to Pandora. I love the way Jilly brought some of her old characters (yes, Rupert is there) into Wicked and also introduced some really gutsy new ones like football mad Feral Jackson. This book is a bit “heavier” and more relevant to real life than the others but I won’t go into details because I don’t want to ruin the book. I think the book is fantastic – go out and buy it!
The only problem is that you can’t put it down once you’ve started reading it!

I haven’t read any Jilly Cooper in years but when I saw this on Amazon for 99p and that it was set in schools I thought that it was time to give her another go.
The book is very much in the style of her other books, some of which I’ve read. It is containing some reoccurring characters- interesting to see how some of them have developed over the years. Many of her characters are real caricatures but there are many who really do capture your heart. I did find some of the under age sex rather disturbing. Some of the events were also very far fetched- but then you don’t read Jilly Cooper for reality!
This book had me laughing out loud, cringing and reaching for the tissues- there are a couple of bits I found really pulled at the heart strings.
I raced through this book and although in all honesty I couldn’t give it five stars I do find myself missing all those ‘Wicked’ characters!

I’ve had this title on my to read list for years and finally picked it up last week. I have just finished it and have to say I utterly loved it. It made me laugh, cry, rage and whoop over and over again! The subject matter can be rather disturbing at times so with warning it is definitely not for the faint hearted!!!
I would highly recommend reading all of the Rutshire Chronicles in order before picking this one up, with the inclusion of so many prior protagonists it will thoroughly enhance your experience of the novel.

“Wicked!” is the first Jilly Cooper book I’ve ever read-I’ve heard great things about the Rutshire Chronicles, so I decided to give this a try. It’s a very long book and I waded through it because I’ve heard such good things about Jilly Cooper’s novels. I wasn’t so keen on this one however. Characters which are present up until roughly a third of the way through the book suddenly disappear, and the the plot takes bizarre twists and turns which left me a little incredulous- by the end I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief for that long. But some of the characters, particularly Lily and Dora, are just fantastic and they were responsible for me finishing the book to the end. I would read other Jilly Cooper books- there are around 10 Rutshire chronicles, so I’m sure the best is yet to be read.
