World War I: An Enthralling Guide from Beginning to End (Military History)
£3.20
It is well known that World War I was kicked off by the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The world superpowers engaged in the bloodiest conflict in history at that time, with millions of casualties on either side. World War I transformed the socio-political landscape of the early 20th century and shaped the lives of countless people for decades to come.
However, there is much more to World War I than Franz Ferdinand’s assassination and the clash of the Entente and Central Powers. It was a conflict deeply rooted in hateful rivalries of the world’s most powerful states and came as a somewhat logical conclusion to the endless balancing and political maneuvering of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And it would change the course of history forever.
This book will dive into the Great War, exploring what caused it, how it unfolded, and it’s short- and long-term consequences. Here are some of the things you will learn about in this book:
- The long nineteenth century and how it affected the political landscape
- Germany and Italy’s unification
- The state of European power politics
- New technological advancements that shaped the war
- The Austro-Hungarian problem and the start of WWI
- Military activities in all theaters of the war
- The influential battles of Verdun, the Somme, Isonzo, and Gallipoli
- Trench warfare and new tactics used in the war
- The entry of the United States and the Russian Revolution
- The final moments of the war
- The Paris Peace Conference and the new world order
- And much, much more!

I am just half way reading this book and I am really enjoying it, very interesting.

This text looks at the events and circumstances in the major countries involved in what, at the time, was called the Great War. It is brief and mentions most salient points. Although history is written by the victors, it tries to be balanced and represents the point of view of the warring factions.
Economic and military development as well as tactics and assumptions and presumptions that influenced the conduct and outcome of the war are discussed. The level of writing and exposition is of the standard one would expect from senior high school. The aftermath of the war and the formation of the League of Nations is also covered.
I was struck, whilst reading, about the parallels with the current war in Ukraine and how proxy wars between major powers can so easily escalate into wider conflict. There are lessons, too, about supplying defenders of their homeland with the means to fight off superior numbers with more fragile morale as they are not convinced of the cause they die for. There are illustrations in most sections and these amplify the text or explain the dispositions of forces. There are some references given at the end, but this is not comprehensive. There is much to like in this text.
What I didn’t like was the occasional clumsy expression, editing errors and omission of relevant and interesting facts that also shaped history. There is mention of the king of Greece having German sympathies, but the inter-connectedness of all the royal families, especially UK and Germany is not explained. Another omission is the use of chemical weapons in this conflict. France were reported as the first to use tear gas, but the Germans developed and deployed more lethal gasses like phosgene and mustard gas before the Allies did. One victim of an Allied forces gas attack was Adolf Hitler. Would events have been different if he had not suffered that experience?.

I do love these books and learnt a hell of a lot from this one, it explains the situation that led to WW1 starting, the players who were trying to increase their territory and standing, the effects the industrial revolution had & why these countries felt it could ultimately change their standing and economic status if they won and the general change globally with nationalism spreading as people were becoming discontent with their monarchy’s and the power they held. So it gives you a good idea on the whys, the events that took place throughout the Great War (World War 1) and the reason it eventually came to an end in late 2018. It finishes with a conclusion and also whets your appetite for the next book in the series regarding World War 2. If you want to know about a significant time in our history you can’t go wrong if you purchase this book.
