This was not my bag at all. If I wasn’t reading this for book club it may well have been a DNF for me. All of the main characters were awful so I had absolutely no investment in any of them. I honestly could not have cared less what happened to them and the story. The cringeworthy sex scenes gave me the ick and the conversations between Alim and Feyi were so repetitive I actually had to check whether my kindle had skipped back pages. I could not wait for this book to be over.

It helped get into some of the corners of my soul and heart that needed an airing out. Whilst others say it’s not deep enough, I found lots of meaning in the moments of healing happening for the two characters towards the end. So much about how to hold space for your feelings and how to own and process them (particularly after grief). It felt a little unhealthy at the beginning but came full circle to something that begun to feel more wholesome towards the end (albeit a bit “fairytale” like). It also taught me how to live through fear. I felt this more than anything as a theme.
This is what reading is about for me. I like my deep stuff but sometimes you just need a book to help you “feel” and this did that. It was like watching twilight all over again – pure escapism and I found myself reading it late into the nights and early mornings.
It’s also salacious in parts and that helped too ???? as well as the humour. This spoke to me so it’s one for my favourites lists and definitely for a reread again. Loved it xx
