Your Rainforest Mind is a life-affirming book about ‘excessively curious, idealistic, sensitive, highly intelligent humans’. Author Paula Prober refers to these individuals as RFMs or ‘rainforest minds’.
Why read Your Rainforest Mind?
– Because the countless examples of what it’s like to be an RFM will make you laugh and cry and feel validated for the amazing being that you are
– Because the book is filled with practical strategies to help with the everyday challenges RFMs face
– Because of the dozens of links to books, articles and websites for further research
– Because after reading it you’ll be a hundred steps closer to knowing your place in this world
– If you’re bringing up a young RFM, you’ll worry less and enjoy your child more
When you grow up believing there’s something wrong with you because you’re so different from other people, you get used to camouflaging yourself to be accepted. Buried deep within, your authentic self yearns to be heard – and yet you don’t even realise the extent to which you’re denying it. Then you read stories like the ones that fill this book, and you nod and you cry as you realise you’re not the only one who feels this way. And gradually that hidden self begins to feel safe to come out and be seen.
I loved the book’s exploration of perfectionism – both intrinsic and extrinsic – and its link to procrastination. I loved the discussion about how choices, possibilities and multipotentiality can be overwhelming. I loved the practical strategies for dealing with the big and small challenges gifted individuals face. I resonated with the chapter on loneliness, and resolved to take action to connect with other RFMs. And I adored the chapter on ‘Authenticity, Creativity and Spirituality’ which finally made me realise that my lifelong search for spiritual meaning isn’t an aberration from my intelligence, but a part of it.
I whole-heartedly agree with the reviewer over at Amazon.com who says this book rises to the top of the giftedness literature for its holistic approach to understanding gifted people.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone struggling, as I have been, with a child who while apparently ‘gifted’ is challenged by certain aspects of their world. I have read lots of books about giftedness in children, and the sensitivities that can accompany it; also about how they may struggle to ‘fit in’, and feel compelled to worry about – and act on – the major problems facing the world, while their peers worry more about fashion and football.
While some these books have contributed to my understanding, Your Rainforest Mind accurately and fully describes my child, and offers suggestions to support happy well rounded development.

If you are looking for an explanation about giftedness this is a very good first book. It adds exercises/tips at the end of each chapter to help you go deeper into a particular expression of gifted traits. A much needed exploration into gifted adulthood

I was a complete mystery, even for me. I often find myself in situations where it feels as though I literally do not speak the same language as the people around me, we use similar words, the same even, yet, our depth of feeling of our experiences seem beyond any sense of connection.
If you wonder at how the way you think, feel, live, aspire, desire, search out for new and challenging, and rewarding skills, and experiences, make for rarity and non-conformity you will find the answers lay in your Rainforest Mind.
You are not broken, you are very deep and whole, you are not a failure, you are an inquisitor and explorer and can learn to comprehend yourself in terms of success and reframe your journey of life; not in context to everyone, but in context to everyone like you, and especially- in context to the life you want to live.

Paula’s rich insights here brought me to tears a few times because she was speaking truths and explaining much of the unsaid discomfort I’ve felt throughout my life. She references all the other important literature about gifted adults and builds upon it. This is one of the best investments I’ve ever made. It’s inspired me to be more authentic and has helped me understand why I’ve often felt so alienated with friends, family, school and jobs. Extraordinary!

I found the book very helpful and especially enjoyed the ’strategies’ pages that were at the end of each chapter. These pages had useful strategies on how to deal with different issues gifted people struggle with. Personally I do not like the case studies so much, because they were little bit on the surface level, but her contemplation was still meaningful.
This is also comforting book if you have suffered from your giftedness in different stages of your life. It made me accept myself one bit more and it’s rare any books actually can ignite that process. I recognized most of the problems she described and was comforted that there are many people out there who have the similar, intense experience of the world. It was amazing how accurately the stories resonated with my own experiences.
Highly recommend.
