Read Costa Award-winning author Christie Watson’s incredible No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling memoir of nursing today.

‘It made me cry. It made me think. It made me laugh’ Adam Kay, author of This is Going to Hurt and Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas

Christie Watson was a nurse for twenty years. Taking us from birth to death and from A&E to the mortuary, The Language of Kindness is an astounding account of a profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness.

We watch Christie as she nurses a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, we stand by her side during her patient’s agonising heart-lung transplant, and we hold our breath as she washes the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive.

In our most extreme moments, when life is lived most intensely, Christie is with us. She is a guide, mentor and friend. And in these dark days of division and isolationism, she encourages us all to stretch out a hand.

              • The Language of Light: A History of Silent Voices

A comprehensive history of deafness, signed languages, and the unresolved struggles of the Deaf to be taught in their unspoken tongue

Partially deaf due to a childhood illness, Gerald Shea is no stranger to the search for communicative grace and clarity. In this eloquent and thoroughly researched book, he uncovers the centuries-long struggle of the Deaf to be taught in sign language—the only language that renders them complete, fully communicative human beings. Shea explores the history of the deeply biased attitudes toward the Deaf in Europe and America, which illogically forced them to be taught in a language they could neither hear nor speak. As even A.G. Bell, a fervent oralist, admitted, sign language is “the quickest method of reaching the mind of a deaf child.”

Shea’s research exposes a persistent but misguided determination among hearing educators to teach the Deaf orally, making the very faculty they lacked the principal instrument of their instruction. To forbid their education in sign language—the “language of light”—is to deny the Deaf their human rights, he concludes.

‘A joyous celebration of 80s action cinema’ – Robbie Collin, Telegraph
                ‘Vastly entertaining’ – The Times

The behind-the-scenes story of the action heroes who ruled 1980s and 90s Hollywood and the beloved films – from Die Hard to The Terminator – that made them stars.

This wildly entertaining account of the golden age of the action movie charts Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s carnage-packed journey from enmity to friendship against the backdrop of Reagan’s America and the Cold War. Revealing fascinating untold stories of the colourful characters who ascended in their wake – high-kickers Chuck Norris and Jackie Chan, glowering tough guys Dolph Lundgren and Steven Seagal, and quipping troublemakers Jean-Claude Van Damme and Bruce Willis – it chronicles the rise of the invincible action hero who used muscle, martial arts or the perfect weapon to save the day. And how, as the 1990s rolled on, the glory days of these macho men – and the vision of masculinity they celebrated – began to fade.

Drawing on candid interviews with the action stars themselves, plus their collaborators, friends and foes, The Last Action Heroes is a no-holds-barred account of a period in Hollywood history when there were no limits to the heights of fame these men achieved, or to the mayhem they wrought, on-screen and off.

                04
****SHORTLISTED FOR THE TELEGRAPH SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2019 RUGBY BOOK OF THE YEAR****

In 1999 Ulster became the most unlikely European champions in rugby history. A squad that included builders, students and lorry drivers, mixed with a handful of players of international quality, overcame the odds and helped to unite a divided nation through the power of sport.

‘The Last Amateurs’ tells the story of how a team went, in just fourteen months, from a record-breaking 56-3 defeat to Wasps, to securing their place in Irish history as the first European champions from Ireland.

Based on interviews with all the key members of the squad – including David Humphreys, Mark McCall, Simon Mason, Andy Ward and Jonny Bell – the book focuses on the players, their varied backgrounds and how the team came together. It also highlights the very different nature of the game, which has become increasingly monetised and sanitised in the years since.

‘The Last Amateurs’ is a celebration of the 1999 victory, and of a campaign that, in the end, managed to bring together the whole island of Ireland – Protestants and Catholics; rugby die-hards and GAA converts. United for eighty minutes, they created one of the most passionate and vibrant scenes the Heineken Cup competition had ever seen, as David Humphreys, alongside the injured Mark McCall, fought through the throng of jubilant pitch invaders to lift the trophy and crown Ulster kings of Europe.

BY THE AUTHOR OF CHERNOBYL: HISTORY OF A TRAGEDY, WINNER OF THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE 2018

WINNER OF THE PUSHKIN HOUSE RUSSIAN BOOK PRIZE 2015

On Christmas Day 1991 Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union. By the next day the USSR was officially no more and the USA had emerged as the world’s sole superpower. Award-winning historian Serhii Plokhy presents a page-turning account of the preceding five months of drama, filled with failed coups d’état and political intrigue.

Honing in on this previously disregarded but crucial period and using recently declassified documents and original interviews with key participants, he shatters the established myths of 1991 and presents a bold new interpretation of the Soviet Union’s final months. Plokhy argues that contrary to the triumphalist Western narrative, George H. W. Bush desperately wanted to preserve the Soviet Union and keep Gorbachev in power, and that it was Ukraine and not the US that played the key role in the collapse of the Soviet Union. The consequences of those five months and the myth-making that has since surrounded them are still being felt in Crimea, Russia, the US, and Europe today.

With its spellbinding narrative and strikingly fresh perspective, The Last Empire is the essential account of one of the most important watershed periods in world history, and is indispensable reading for anyone seeking to make sense of international politics today.

                08

Scream meets Gossip Girl with a dash of One of Us is Lying!

When it comes to horror movies, the rules are clear:
                – Avoid abandoned buildings, warehouses, and cabins at all times.
                – Stay together: don’t split up, not even just to “check something out.…
                – If there’s a murderer on the loose, do NOT make out with anyone …

New girl Rachel Chavez turns to horror movies for comfort, preferring them to the bored rich kids of her fancy New York High School. But then Rachel is recruited by the Mary Shelley Club, a mysterious student club that sets up terrifying Fear Tests; elaborate pranks inspired by urban legends and horror movies.

But when a sinister masked figure appears, Rachel realises that her past has caught up with her. It’s time for the ultimate prank to play out …

An atmospheric page-turner about loving scary movies, longing to belong, and uncovering the many masks people wear. Kirkus Reviews

A delightfully wicked thrill ride that had me on the edge of my seat. The Last Girl beckons the shadows and laughs in the face of fear. I didn’t want it to end!
Chelsea Pitcher, bestselling author of This Lie Can Kill You

The Last Girl is like my favourite teen horror movies in book form. It’s a tense, cinematic read that gripped me from the very beginning and is one of the best books I’ve read this year.

              • The Last List of Mabel Beaumont: The unforgettable book everyone is talking about in 2023

                08

The list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…

Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.

But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.

Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.

It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.

What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…

A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

                01
The reviewer of the Boston Globe said point blank: “Over the years, I’ve read hundreds of books on Hollywood and the movie business, and this one is right at the top.” As the elusive, tyrannical head of the Music Corporation of America (MCA) until the 1990s, Lew Wasserman was the most powerful and feared man in show business for more than half a century. His career spanned the entire history of the movies, from the silent era to the present, and he was guru to Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, and Jimmy Stewart, and to a new generation of filmmakers beginning with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. For more than four years, Dennis McDougal interviewed over 350 people who knew the man with the giant dark horn-rimmed glasses, colleagues, relatives, rivals, and drew on tens of thousands of pages of documents to produce this extraordinary and first-ever portrait of a legend and his times, a book that the New York Times Book Review called “thoroughly reported and engrossing” and that the Daily News called, simply, “a bombshell.”

                08
Beginning in 1994 and closing in the first months of 1998, the UK passed through a cultural moment as distinct and as celebrated as any since the war. Founded on rock music, celebrity, boom-time economics and fleeting political optimism – this was ‘Cool Britannia’. Records sold in their millions, a new celebrity elite emerged and Tony Blair’s Labour Party found itself, at long last, returned to government. Drawing on interviews from all the major bands – including Oasis, Blur, Elastica and Suede – from music journalists, record executives and those close to government, The Last Party charts the rise and fall of the Britpop movement. John Harris was there; and in this gripping new book he argues that the high point of British music’s cultural impact also signalled its effective demise – If rock stars were now friends of the government, then how could they continue to matter?

                September 25, 2023

A heinous, co-ordinated plot to attack a series of prominent synagogues, located across five different continents, is scheduled to take place on Yom Kippur – the Jewish Day of Atonement. For that one day of the year, celebrated prayer houses will be packed to the rafters with Jewish worshippers and the results could prove to be devastating. The mastermind behind the attacks is a direct blood descendant of Adolf Hitler – his grandson, former Republican presidential candidate, John Franklin. Artfully manipulating a number of fanatical, Neo-Nazi para-military groups across the globe, Franklin is looking to fulfil his grandfather’s legacy and land a major blow against Jews located across the world.
But in reality, the attacks are nothing more than an ingenious smokescreen for a far more sinister plot, which if successful, could severely unbalance geo-politics in the Middle East, sparking a global war between the Superpowers.

Chief Inspector Nicholas Vargas of The Buenos Aires Police Department and Troy Hembury, the Head of Internal Security for the White House combine forces with senior colleagues at the FBI and Mossad, in a race against time to try to uncover the truth behind “Operation Atonement” and thwart the plan, as the consequences of failure could be disastrous for world peace.

Peter James – Brian Klein is an exciting new talent on the thriller writing scene.

The Scotsman – “A rarity… A thriller that grabs you by the scruff of the neck from the very first page.”

The London Economic – “A wild rollercoaster that’s thrilling from the beginning to the end. A superb thriller where Mossad and the Taliban come head to head.”

Reader’s Digest – “Buckle up…a page turner that is impossible to put down till the very end. A thrilling and dangerous ‘What If’ thriller”

Female First – “Action packed, fast-paced and filled with amazing twists…great characters too! The Führer’s Prophecy is the perfect sequel to the perfect debut, the political thriller, The Counterfeit Candidate.”

Stories SWNS – “With this explosive sequel, author Brian Klein has cemented his position as Britain’s most exciting thriller writer.”

McMurtrie’s old nemesis, Jack Willistone, is found dead on the banks of the Black Warrior River. Willistone had his share of enemies, but all evidence points to a forgotten, broken woman as the killer. At the urging of the suspect’s desperate fourteen-year-old daughter, McMurtrie agrees to take the case.

But as seasoned as McMurtrie is, even he isn’t prepared for how personal and dangerous this case is going to get. With the trial drawing near and his sharp young partner, Rick Drake, dealing with a family tragedy, he recruits his best friend, Bocephus Haynes, to help investigate.

As key witnesses disappear and old demons return, time becomes McMurtrie’s most fearsome opponent. Soon loyalties will be tested and the boundaries of law will be broken as McMurtrie fights to save his legacy—and his client’s life—before the truth is buried forever in the muddy waters of the Black Warrior.

              • The Laws of Alfred: The Domboc and the Making of Anglo-Saxon Law (Studies in Legal History)

Alfred the Great’s domboc (‘book of laws’) is the longest and most ambitious legal text of the Anglo-Saxon period. Alfred places his own laws, dealing with everything from sanctuary to feuding to the theft of bees, between a lengthy translation of legal passages from the Bible and the legislation of the West-Saxon King Ine (r. 688–726), which rival his own in length and scope. This book is the first critical edition of the domboc published in over a century, as well as a new translation. Five introductory chapters offer fresh insights into the laws of Alfred and Ine, considering their backgrounds, their relationship to early medieval legal culture, their manuscript evidence and their reception in later centuries. Rather than a haphazard accumulation of ordinances, the domboc is shown to issue from deep reflection on the nature of law itself, whose effects would permanently alter the development of early English legislation.

              • The Laws of Restitution

In The Laws of Restitution, Robert Stevens shows that there is no unified law of restitution or unjust enrichment. Instead, there are seven or eight different kinds of private law claim, depending on how you count them, which have nothing important in common one with another that have been grouped together by commentators. Few of these claims have anything to do with enrichment, and what is restituted differs between them. Like all private law claims, those gathered here concern (in)justice between individuals, but they have no further unity. Many of them are not based upon an agreement or a wrong, but that negative feature has no utility. “Restitution” or “unjust enrichment’ should cease to be discussed as unified areas of law.

With close attention to caselaw and legislation, the work identifies and describes the various reasons for “restitution” that any properly constructed system of private law ought to recognise. It explains how the law of restitution relates to, and is bound up with, contract, torts, equity, and property law.
