• The Ten Legal Cases That Made Modern Britain

    04

LIFE. SEX. RACE. POWER. FREE SPEECH. PROTEST. PRIVACY. DEMOCRACY. SOVEREIGNTY. DEATH.

Society shapes law… and law shapes society.

We like to imagine that progress comes about when Parliament spots a looming groundswell in public opinion and responds by changing the laws that govern our daily lives. This is not always true.

In this fascinating book, Inigo Bing unravels ten legal cases in which the decisions of judges or a jury either heralded a shift in outlook or forced Parliament to respond to simmering social change.

Some of these cases demonstrate the role judges have in defending our civil liberties against overweening executive power, articulating inherent unwritten rights Parliament would prefer to keep quiet about. Others explore what happens when rapid technological or social change outpaces government, placing urgent ethical dilemmas in the lap of the court. All of them have had a lasting impact on the society we inhabit.

Taken together, these stories provide a powerful insight into eighty years of British social, political and cultural history, illustrating why legal cases are just as important to making our world as laws written by Parliament or grassroots changes within society.

  • The Theory of Gambling and Statistical Logic

    01
Early in his rise to enlightenment, man invented a concept that has since been variously viewed as a vice, a crime, a business, a pleasure, a type of magic, a disease, a folly, a weakness, a form of sexual substitution, an expression of the human instinct. He invented gambling. Recent advances in the field, particularly Parrondo’s paradox, have triggered a surge of interest in the statistical and mathematical theory behind gambling. This interest was acknowledge in the motion picture, ’21’ inspired by the true story of the MIT students who mastered the art of card counting to reap millions from the Vegas casinos. Richard Epstein’s classic book on gambling and its mathematical analysis covers the full range of games from penny matching to blackjack, from Tic-Tac-Toe to the stock market (including Edward Thorp’s warrant-hedging analysis). He even considers whether statistical inference can shed light on the study of paranormal phenomena. Epstein is witty and insightful, a pleasure to dip into and read and rewarding to study. The book is written at a fairly sophisticated mathematical level; this is not ‘Gambling for Dummies’ or ‘How To Beat The Odds Without Really Trying’ A background in upper-level undergraduate mathematics is helpful for understanding this work.

  • The Throne: 1,000 Years of British Coronations

    01
From the crowning of Charles III, thirty-nine coronations have been held in Westminster Abbey since the Norman Conquest. Only two monarchs – Edward V and Edward VIII – were uncrowned, and a further twenty or so Scottish monarchs were crowned elsewhere, usually at either Scone Abbey or Holyrood Abbey.

In The Throne, Ian Lloyd turns his inimitable, quick-witted style to these key events in British royal history, providing fascinating anecdotes and interesting facts: William the Conqueror’s Christmas Day crowning, during which jubilant shouts were mistaken by his guards as an assassination attempt; the dual coronation of William and Mary in 1689; the pared-back ‘Half Crown-ation’ of William IV; and the televised spectacle of Elizabeth II’s 1953 ceremony.

Detailing everything from the famous Coronation Chair made for Edward I and the Crown Jewels to the infamously uncomfortable Gold State Coach – this is a truly spectacular celebration of British culture and the ultimate pomp of royalty.

  • The Thunder, Perfect Mind: Voice of the Divine Feminine

The Thunder, Perfect Mind is one of many significant texts known as The Nag Hammadi Library, discovered in Egypt in 1945 and dated as approximately written around 325 CE. Similar to the form of certain Greek epics, the piece is repetitive and parallel in structure, paradoxical and confrontive in content, and written or spoken in a first-person voice. The author’s repeated declaration “I AM…” is clearly indicative of its narrator’s Divine nature one who possesses the “Perfect Mind” or “Perfect Intellect”; and one who passionately enjoins her hearers and readers to “wake up,” “give heed,” and “pay attention.”

This Divine Voice is clearly Feminine, referring to “I am ‘she'” or “I am the ‘wife’ or ‘mother'” more than 25 times in the course of the short work, yet is far from comforting or sweet in its declarations. Rather this Voice “thunders,” unabashedly, offering contradictions and the enigma of opposites in almost every line. It is this paradoxical nature of its content and its upfront feminine power statement that make the work such a controversial, much researched, and highly regarded treasure. From scholar and author Elaine Pagels (The Gnostic Gospels) to bestselling novelist Sue Monk Kidd (The Book of Longing), from author Toni Morrison (who quoted the work in the epigraph of several books), to filmmaker and documentarian, Ridley Scott’s authoritative commentators within countless genres of religion, the arts, philosophy, history, etc., have been taken by the clarity and mystery of these obviously sacred but non-doctrinal utterances.

This contemporary rendering by American spiritual teacher Lee Lozowick (1943-2010) reflects one individual’s heartfelt cry in response to the call of the divine Feminine. As both author and lyricist, Lozowick’s work is distinguished by his pleas for the awakening of Woman – not an individual female, but the Feminine principle that resides within all genders, and collectively within the world soul. He does what all seekers of truth are enjoined to do; that is, make the perennial wisdom one’s own.

Today’s readers, searching for a ground on which to stand in catastrophic times, will find the text both empowering and humbling, challenging and view changing. Beyond the provincialism of many religious systems, The Thunder, Perfect Mind offers its readers and hearers the echo of their own truest longing.

  • The Time Traveler’s Oracle: A 44-Card Deck and Guidebook

A mystical adventure through space and time beckons you! Each journey through The Time Traveler’s Oracle can activate secret messages from the depths of your soul―and from the Universe. Simply stepping through the space-time continuum sparks profound, positive shifts and changes within you.

Time traveling–which is the ability to travel from one temporal locale to another–beckons us to learn and grow. While traditionally we think of this as a journey into the past or future, from a spiritual perspective, it can also be lateral travel into a different locale at a different time. It’s a sacred pilgrimage that allows you to see the world, the Universe, and yourself with new meaning and new perspectives.

From the earliest history of humankind, people turned to visionaries to gain insight into their lives, and these seers stepped through mystic gateways into other realms–and other time periods–to bring back answers and give meaning to the seemingly random events of life. These seers were the earliest time travelers. It’s no longer necessary to turn to a seer; you have the innate capacity to travel through divine entryways to obtain an understanding of the circumstances of your life.

Deepen your connection to the mysterious, natural forces around you, and find the long-sought answers to your most heartfelt questions, as you take an extraordinary voyage to different locales and time periods. Using the power of your consciousness/imagination–with oracle cards as guideposts along the way–you will be transported to powerful sites, such as:

    – The Venice Renaissance in Italy
    – Uluru in Australia
    – The River Nile in Egypt
    – The Amazon Rainforest in Brazil
    – The Taj Mahal in India
    – The Northern Lights in Iceland
    – A Zen Monastery in Japan, and so much more.

These oracle cards can help you deepen your connection to the mysterious, natural forces around you, as well as to the far past of our planet and beyond . . . and provide profound inner wisdom. Whether they take you to an event in history or a general locale on the planet, each trip carries a personal message for you, such as creativity, growth, courage, patience, and more. The cards can be used to gain information about the future, help you make decisions, show you where you are presently, and help you discover your inner truth.

  • The Tommy of the First World War

    01
‘Tommy Atkins’ has been the nickname given to soldiers of the British Army since the eighteenth century. The origin of the name is shrouded in mystery, but it has stuck. By 1914, the Tommy had changed dramatically since the days of Queen Victoria’s redcoats. Edwardian army reforms had improved recruitment and training and had re-organised the regular forces and reserves.

When the First World War broke out, the system went smoothly into action and the BEF was carried across the Channel to France. But the British Army was relatively small and the First World War required a rapid expansion of the ranks. Lord Kitchener’s call for men raised the so-called New Army, half a million strong, but more were needed and conscription came into force. Many of those who volunteered together were also trained together and fought side by side in battle. In the fire of machine guns and amid the shell-fire, large numbers of men from city parishes, towns and villages fell together. Neil Storey takes us through the recruitment, equipment, training and experiences of these soldiers in the First World War: the Tommies, ‘the poor bloody infantry’.

This book is part of the Britain’s Heritage series, which provides definitive introductions to the riches of Britain’s past, and is the perfect way to get acquainted with the Tommy of the First World War.

Do you mind when the person behind you has a full blown argument on their mobile phone with the speaker positioned at extra loud, just so you are sure to get both argumentative sides of the mutual yelling? Do you balk at getting up close and personal with the great unwashed?
