Learning Places: The Afterlives of Area Studies (Asia-Pacific: Culture, Politics, and Society)
Under globalization, the project of area studies and its relationship to the fields of cultural, ethnic, and gender studies has grown more complex and more in need of the rigorous reexamination that this volume and its distinguished contributors undertake. In the aftermath of World War II, area studies were created in large part to supply information on potential enemies of the United States. The essays in Learning Places argue, however, that the post–Cold War era has seen these programs largely degenerate into little more than public relations firms for the areas they research.
A tremendous amount of money flows—particularly within the sphere of East Asian studies, the contributors claim—from foreign agencies and governments to U.S. universities to underwrite courses on their histories and societies. In the process, this volume argues, such funds have gone beyond support to the wholesale subsidization of students in graduate programs, threatening the very integrity of research agendas. Native authority has been elevated to a position of primacy; Asian-born academics are presumed to be definitive commentators in Asian studies, for example. Area studies, the contributors believe, has outlived the original reason for its construction. The essays in this volume examine particular topics such as the development of cultural studies and hyphenated studies (such as African-American, Asian-American, Mexican-American) in the context of the failure of area studies, the corporatization of the contemporary university, the prehistory of postcolonial discourse, and the problematic impact of unformulated political goals on international activism.
Learning Places points to the necessity, the difficulty, and the possibility in higher education of breaking free from an entrenched Cold War narrative and making the study of a specific area part of the agenda of education generally. The book will appeal to all whose research has a local component, as well as to those interested in the future course of higher education generally.Contributors. Paul A. Bové, Rey Chow, Bruce Cummings, James A. Fujii, Harry Harootunian, Masao Miyoshi, Tetsuo Najita, Richard H. Okada, Benita Parry, Moss Roberts, Bernard S. Silberman, Stefan Tanaka, Rob Wilson, Sylvia Yanagisako, Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto

Muhammad and the Empires of Faith: The Making of the Prophet of Islam
In Muhammad and the Empires of Faith, Sean W. Anthony demonstrates how critical readings of non-Muslim and Muslim sources in tandem can breathe new life into the historical study of Muhammad and how his message transformed the world. By placing these sources within the intellectual and cultural world of Late Antiquity, Anthony offers a fresh assessment of the earliest sources for Muhammad’s life, taking readers on a grand tour of the available evidence, and suggests what new insights stand to be gained from the techniques and methods pioneered by countless scholars over the decades in a variety of fields. Muhammad and the Empires of Faith offers both an authoritative introduction to the multilayered traditions surrounding the life of Muhammad and a compelling exploration of how these traditions interacted with the broader landscape of Late Antiquity.

The Path to Jannah: Guidance from the Quran and the Prophet’s Biography on the Principles, Actions, and Mindset that Lead to Paradise in the Hereafter (islamic books)
The Path to Jannah
Throughout history, people from different walks of life have attempted to portray the unique attributes of Paradise in paintings, films, and literature—yet all that we have seen (or imagined) in this worldly life is nothing compared to what Paradise actually is. As conveyed to us by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the last and final prophet of the heavenly revealed religions, it is a place that “no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard of, and nobody has ever thought of.”
Despite the mystery surrounding this topic, the Glorious Quran reveals numerous details about the final abode of the believers (called “Jannah” in Arabic), providing rich descriptions of its magnificent bounties and clear guidelines for passing the tests of this life that will grant one entrance to Allah’s Eternal Gardens.
Written in accessible language for those wishing to know more about the Islamic concept of Paradise, “The Path to Jannah” is a book that takes readers on an insightful journey into some key Quranic verses and authentic sayings of the Prophet (PBUH) that we should all be aware of in order to understand and fulfill our true purpose in life, which is something that can only be achieved by taking the path of goodness that Allah SWT promises will lead to success in the Hereafter.
“The Path to Jannah” is an uplifting and beneficial read for anyone who wishes to cultivate the key traits associated with the inhabitants of Paradise, with practical tips and advice to help all those striving to attain the ultimate reward.
Some of the questions answered in this book include:
- Who are the people who pass the tests of this worldly life and end up in Paradise?
- Will they remember anything about the worldly life of this dunya?
- Will they be reunited with their loved ones?
- How do the angels assist the believers in the Hereafter?
- What does Islam say about the experience of death?
- Is Paradise the same for all people—or are some more privileged than others?
- Will it be possible to see the Creator in the Hereafter?
- Is faith alone sufficient to grant someone entry to Paradise?
Suitable for teens and adults alike, “The Path to Jannah” provides a complete roadmap to help sincere seekers of the truth reach the final destination of Paradise.

Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering
In his controversial 1973 book, Is God a White Racist?, William R. Jones sharply criticized black theologians for their agnostic approach to black suffering, noting that the doctrine of an ominibenevolent God poses very significant problems for a perennially oppressed community. He proposed a “humanocentric theism” which denies God’s sovereignty over human history and imputes autonomous agency to humans. By rendering humans alone responsible for moral evil, Jones’s theology freed blacks to revolt against the evil of oppression without revolting against God. Sherman Jackson now places Jones’s argument in conversation with the classical schools of Islamic theology. The problem confronting the black community is not simply proving that God exists, says Jackson. The problem, rather, is establishing that God cares. No religious expression that fails to tackle the problem of black suffering can hope to enjoy a durable tenure in the black community. For the Muslim, therefore, it is essential to find a Quranic/Islamic grounding for the protest-oriented agenda of black religion. That is the task Jackson undertakes in this pathbreaking work. Jackson’s previous book, Islam and the Blackamerican (OUP 2006) laid the groundwork for this ambitious project. Its sequel, Islam and the Problem of Black Suffering, solidifies Jackson’s reputation as the foremost theologian of the black American Islamic movement.Read more

To live a meaningful life – one that brings us joy, contentment and fulfilment – we have to do the inner spiritual work of becoming a more complete human being. from the Introduction Over the centuries, Islamic sages have gleaned timeless spiritual insights and practices from sacred texts, meditation and knowledge of the heart – gems that have been passed down from generation to generation. Muhammad Messenger of Allah
Kitab Ash-Shifa bi ta’rif huquq al-Mustafa, (Healing by the recognition of the Rights of the Chosen One), of Qadi ‘Iyad (d. 544H/1149CE) is perhaps the most frequently used and commented upon handbook in which the Prophet’s, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, life, his qualities and his miracles are described in every detail. Generally known by its short title, Ash-Shifa, this work was so highly admired throughout the Muslim world that it soon acquired a sanctity of its own for it is said: “If Ash-Shifa is found in a house, this house will not suffer any harm… when a sick person reads it or it is recited to him, Allah will restore his health.” Ash-Shifa gathers together all that is necessary to acquaint the reader with the true stature of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with the esteem and respect which is due to him, and with the verdict regarding anyone who does not fulfil what his stature demands or who attempts to denigrate his supreme status – even by as much as a nail paring.

Chinese Brush Painting through the Seasons
Chinese brush painting is a traditional style of painting that has evolved over many centuries. Artists use ink and colour pigments to paint onto rice paper or silk.
An important characteristic of this kind of painting is holding and directing the brush in the right way to produce strokes that are delicate and refined. The four co-authors of this book – Sun Chenggang, Ning Xiangying, Ning Jialu and Miao Hongbo – are particularly gifted proponents of this style, which has connections with traditional calligraphy.
Chinese brush painting typically includes themes such as birds, plants and flowers, landscapes, fruit and vegetables and fish. This book explores these themes through the four seasons, with the peony depicted in spring, the lotus flower in summer, the vegetable harvest in autumn and the bamboo bud in winter. Many of the subjects are symbolic and have connotations of good fortune, auspiciousness, good health, a long life, a good harvest, a flourishing family, wealth – even immortality!
Explained in the introduction to each project, the symbolism is followed by clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations. There is a short section at the beginning of the book describing tools, materials and techniques to help readers achieve the almost ethereal beauty and delicacy of this style of painting.
