Under the Whispering Door
Witty, haunting and kind, Under the Whispering Door is a gift for troubled times. TJ Klune brings us a warm hug of a story about a man who spent his life at the office – and his afterlife building a home.
From the author of joyous New York Times bestseller The House in the Cerulean Sea.
Welcome to Charon’s Crossing.
The tea is hot, the scones are fresh and the dead are just passing through.
When a reaper comes to collect Wallace from his own sparsely-attended funeral, Wallace is outraged. But he begins to suspect she’s right, and he is in fact dead. Then when Hugo, owner of a most peculiar tea shop, promises to help him cross over, Wallace reluctantly accepts the truth.
Yet even in death, he refuses to abandon his life – even though Wallace spent all of it working, correcting colleagues and hectoring employees. He’d had no time for frivolities like fun and friends. But as Wallace drinks tea with Hugo and talks to his customers, he wonders if he was missing something.
The feeling grows as he shares jokes with the resident ghost, manifests embarrassing footwear and notices the stars. So when he’s given one week to pass through the door to the other side, Wallace sets about living a lifetime in just seven days.
Fans of A Man Called Ove and The Good Place will fall for this queer love story by TJ Klune.
Praise for TJ Klune:

Underground Asia: Global Revolutionaries and the Assault on Empire
SHORTLISTED FOR THE CUNDILL HISTORY PRIZE 2021
AN ECONOMIST AND HISTORY TODAY BOOK OF THE YEAR 2020
‘Compelling and highly original … The Asia that we see today is the product of the ‘underground’ which Harper describes with skill and empathy in this monumental work’ Rana Mitter, Literary Review
The story of the hidden struggle waged by secret networks around the world to destroy European imperialism
The end of Europe’s empires has so often been seen as a story of high politics and warfare. In Tim Harper’s remarkable new book the narrative is very different: it shows how empires were fundamentally undermined from below. Using the new technology of cheap printing presses, global travel and the widespread use of French and English, young radicals from across Asia were able to communicate in ways simply not available before. These clandestine networks stretched to the heart of the imperial metropolises: to London, to Paris, to the Americas, but also increasingly to Moscow.
They created a secret global network which was for decades engaged in bitter fighting with imperial police forces. They gathered in the great hubs of Asia – Calcutta, Singapore, Batavia, Hanoi, Tokyo, Shanghai, Canton and Hong Kong – and plotted with ceaseless ingenuity, both through persuasion and terrorism, the end of the colonial regimes. Many were caught and killed or imprisoned, but others would go on to rule their newly independent countries.
Drawing on an amazing array of new sources, Underground Asia turns upside-down our understanding of twentieth-century empire. The reader enters an extraordinary world of stowaways, false identities, secret codes, cheap firearms, assassinations and conspiracies, as young Asians made their own plans for their future.
‘Magnificent – it reads like a thriller and was difficult to put down’ Peter Frankopan, History Today

Understanding Islam: Its Spirit and Values
“Most of the great religions of the world began with the need to reform individuals and society, especially when there was large-scale moral degeneration. But over time, their essence became obscured by politics and rhetoric, leading to misinterpretation and fundamentalism. Islam is no exception.
Understanding Islam examines the true spirit and essence of the religion based on its original scripture, the Holy Quran, and how far it has moved away from its spirit and values. Using Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translation, The Meaning of Glorious Quran: Text, Translation and Commentary, as well as Wahiduddin Khan and Farida Khanam’s translation, The Quran, the author discusses the Quranic invalidity of the interpretation of the religion by hardliners and counters prevailing distortions in the interpretation of some of the verses that only serve divisive and extremist agendas. The book also sheds light on simple yet profound questions of right and wrong, divine mercy and wrath, trials and prayer, life and the afterlife.
A moving and deeply spiritual read, Understanding Islam is a must-read to comprehend the true nature of Islam.

Understanding Religion and Spirituality in Clinical Practice (The Society of Analytical Psychology Monograph Series)
Understanding Religion and Spirituality in Clinical Practice is a volume in the clinical practice monograph series from the Society of Analytical Psychology. This series is intended primarily for trainees on psychotherapy and psychodynamic counselling courses, and for those who are newly qualified. Here, the author considers the difficulties clinicians may encounter when patients talk about God or about their spiritual life, and how necessary it is for therapists to examine their own image of God and their own understanding of spirituality, so that they can distinguish these from those of their patients. She emphasizes how varied are people’s images and understanding of what “God” stands for, and how in healthy development these will change over time. The book demonstrates, through numerous clinical vignettes, how clinicians can understand a patient’s talking about religion or about God – hearing the voice of God, having a vision of God, or being convinced that God wants them to act in a particular way; or, equally, seeing the Devil.Read more

Understanding SEO: A Systematic Approach to Search Engine Optimization
I’m trying to pull a Wittgenstein here, and by that, I mean writing the definitive book on a topic and then declaring the matter solved. Similar to Wittgenstein, I will fail, however while doing so, I will enhance the status quo of an entire discipline: Search Engine Optimization – SEO.The primary goal of this book is to deliver a framework – that is, a way to think about – SEO. If you have online experience, whether you are a manager, developer, editor, product owner, or hacker, you should be able to read and comprehend this book. You should then be able to use what you have learned to make informed SEO decisions for your business. Be aware this book does not waste space replicating any technical specs (those you can easily google yourself), but it will explain what you need to do, when you need to do it, and why you need to do it. Also, this book is about SEO, organic search engine optimization, and not about SEA, AdWords or PPC.
This book is heavy on theory and light on examples. It is up to you to use your imagination, your experience, and your initiative to combine it all in a way that is suitable for your company.
If you are an SEO manager within an SEO agency, then this book is not for you. You are part of the problem, not part of the solution. This book exists to make you redundant.

Sikhism is often the religion that teachers have the least confidence in teaching, despite being the fifth largest religion in the world, and being commonly regarded as one of the six main religions to be taught in schools. Understanding Your ZX81 ROM (28) (Retro Reproductions)
Launched in 1981, Sir Clive Sinclair’s ZX81 – successor to his ZX80 released the year before – was designed to be a low-cost introduction to home computing for the general public. It was a hugely successful machine, with over one and a half million ‘official’ units being sold; many more unauthorised ‘clones’ were also produced, particularly in Russia and other Eastern Bloc countries of the era. One could either purchase the machine pre-built, or – as a significant number of consumers did – buy it in kit form for assembly at home at a slightly cheaper price. This ‘DIY’ approach, encouraged by Sinclair Research, became a core element of the computer’s genetic make-up. Those who were comfortable putting together the four silicon chips and other such components were just as keen to poke around the machine’s memory, learning as much as they could about its capability; the programs they would write could easily be shared once saved onto a standard audio cassette.
This book helps the reader truly understand how the ZX81 works, with sections covering everything from the structure of the Z80 microprocessor used in the machine to the computer’s registers, ALU and more.
With an introduction to both binary and hex, Understanding Your ZX81 ROM helped many people get the most out of their machine in the very earliest days of home computing.
