  • Brutal North: Post-War Modernist Architecture in the North of England

    08

BRUTAL NORTH offers the first photographic exploration of modernist and Brutalist architecture across the North of England.

During the post-war years the North of England saw the building of some of the most aspirational, enlightened and successful modernist architecture in the world. For the first time, a single photographic book captures those buildings, in all their power and progressive ambition.

Over the last few years acclaimed photographer Simon Phipps has travelled and sought out the publicly commissioned architecture of the post-war North. From Newcastle’s Byker Wall Estate, voted the best neighbourhood in the UK, to the extraordinary Park Hill Estate in Sheffield, from Preston’s sweeping bus station and Liverpool’s Royal Insurance Building, these structures have seen off threats to their survival and are rightly celebrated for the imprint they leave upon the skyline and the cultural life of their cities.

This inspiring invitation to explore northern modernism includes maps and detailed information about all the architecture photographed.

  • Brutal Score: A Single Dad/Nanny Hockey Romance

***A Single Dad/ Nanny, Steamy Hockey Romance***

It was only supposed to be one-hot-night in Vegas with a total stranger. We even agreed not to exchange names or occupations. So how in the hell did I end up in Seattle standing on the front stoop of his mansion as the new live-in nanny two weeks later?

Well, turns out Karma works quick because I stole something that night off the sexy stranger’s nightstand before I snuck out of his room without saying goodbye and now, I’m going to pay for it.

I never steal! I’m practically an honorary Eagle Scout but he said it was his lucky charm and as of lately, my life has seemed void of any luck for quite some time. But now with his ruggedly handsome face sporting a brutal scowl that’s usually reserved for his opponents on the ice, I think I’m going to need that lucky charm to do it’s magic.

I’d happily turn right around and walk back down the driveway but unfortunately… I need this job to buy me a little more time after completing draining my savings to avoid my ex-fiancé and his new girlfriend.

Kaenan only needs help until the end of the hockey season and then I’ll head back to face the music and return to my old life in Colorado…

  • Brutalist Italy: Concrete architecture from the Alps to the Mediterranean Sea

Containing over 140 exclusive photographs – ranging from private homes to football stadia – across every region of the country, Brutalist Italy is the first publication to focus entirely on this subject.

‘Brutalist Italian architecture enthusiasts and concrete completists will be spoilt for choice by Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego’s pictorial tour.’ – Wallpaper*

What makes Italian Brutalist buildings different to their counterparts in other countries? Containing over 140 exclusive photographs – ranging from private homes to churches and cemeteries via football stadia – across every region of the country, Brutalist Italy is the first publication to focus entirely on this subject.

Architectural photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego (authors of Soviet Asia) have spent the past five years travelling over 20,000 kilometres documenting the monumental concrete structures of their native country.

Brutalism – with its minimalist aesthetic, favouring raw materials and structural elements over decorative design – has a complex relationship with Italian history. After World War II, Italian architects were keen to distance themselves from fascism, without rejecting the architectural modernism that had flourished during that era. They developed a form of contemporary architecture that engaged with traditional methods and materials, drawing on uncontaminated historical references. This plurality of pasts assimilated into new constructions is a recurring feature of the country’s Brutalist buildings, imparting to them a unique identity.

From the imposing social housing of Le Vele di Scampia to the celestial Our Lady of Tears Sanctuary, Syracuse – Brutalist Italy collects the most compelling examples of this extraordinary architecture for the first time in a single volume.

The book is dual language, with texts in both English and Italian.

REVIEW by LIMPING CHICKEN– “The World’s Most Popular Deaf Blog”

    Review by Rebecca-Anne Withey.

“I’ve been enjoying a book from the Let’s Sign BSL series by Cath Smith.BSL Baby Sign Link book is a first for DeafBooks due to how the illustrations also feature QR codes to scan and link to video clips of moving images – so you can see the signs in action! The video links are by Remark! and demonstrated by a Deaf BSL user.

The illustrations in the book are beautifully clear, with easy to follow instructions yet I was anxious how the video clips would work, being the technophobe I am!

I needn’t have worried. All you need is an internet connection, a smart phone and to download a free scanner straight onto your phone.

Not only does the book feature a wide range of every day signs from food and drink to praises such as well done and good boy/girl, it also has a clear chart of the finger spelling alphabet as well as descriptions of basic hand shapes (which I wasn’t previously aware of!)

The series of signs are divided into chapters such as Going Out, Making Things Better and In the Bathroom.”…………..

……….“I was pleased to see that DeafBooks has a much wider range of resources available, from flash cards and BSL songbooks to curriculum support and eBooks for family signs.

I will also be recommending their BSL series to friends of mine who have expressed interest in their hearing children learning BSL as at the moment in my area there are no BSL classes available for children.

Congratulations to DeafBooks and to Remark! for producing such a valuable resource. ”

Note from DeafBooks – the QR codes can also be scanned from the camera on smart phones and ipads.

    .

There are additional notes and tips beneath the video clips and you can comment and ask questions. Your suggestions and feedback are welcome.

  • BSL KING CHARLES 3rd CORONATION SOUVENIR & ACTIVITY BOOK: Colouring Puzzles & Games: British Sign Language Vocabulary

    02
Enjoy this Souvenir Activity book with puzzles, games and colouring pages for all the family to enjoy.

This publication began as a free download of six posters for families and teachers looking for BSL materials for revision of signs learned in classes to mark the historic event of the Coronation of King Charles 3rd on 6th May 2023 .

Downloading and printing is not readily available to everyone and it became evident that there was a need for a printed version – and so the six posters have grown into an activity booklet that can also be kept as a souvenir of this landmark occasion. It contains a mixture of colouring pages, wordsearches and fingerspelling puzzles.

    The sign vocabulary includes:
King, Charles, 3rd, Coronation, Parade, Westminster Abbey, Street, Party, Cake, Picnic, Family, Friends, Horse, Gold, Carriage, Buckingham Palace, Royal Family, British, Flag, Red, White, Blue.

These are again listed with written descriptions in a Glossary at the back of the book along with the Fingerspelling Alphabet and Handshape Key.

The colouring pages have a blank reverse to avoid bleed-through
and there are a number of word puzzles to entertain individual and family groups with varying degrees of difficulty.

  • BSL Learner: Class Tracker/Planner for BSL learners with additional Mind Map pages

    01

British Sign Language (BSL) is a rich and varied language and the first language of over 85,000 people in this country.

As a BSL learner I designed this book to allow me to easily track what I’m learning in class and support my home practising.

This 6″ x 9″ book has 52 individual class pages with space to track:

    • New vocabulary/signs (handy for particular signs to practice that week)
    • Key Themes/Topics. This area could be used for writing down exam themes, handshape information, grammar points etc
    • Notes/Feedback. Track feedback your tutor gives you in class or note additional points you want to remember.
    • Daily Tracker. 7 checkboxes to mark off how many days you’ve practised that week.

Following the individual class pages are 9 double page spreads with a Mind-Map page on one side and a Blank Dot-Grid page on the other.

Mind Maps are an excellent way to drill down into a particular theme or topic, detail the vocabulary you know/need to know in a particular area (eg Weather, Food, Holidays etc) or plan out conversations/presentations. Each Mind-Map page consists of:

    • 1 Key Theme box
    • 6 Category boxes
    • 16 Sub-Category boxes
    • 8 blank lines for expanding on your mind map

A great gift for a BSL learner.
